According to The Greeley Tribune., the town of Severance, Colorado recently lifted it’s longstanding ban on snowball fights thanks to the efforts of Dane Best, who made his case that allowing snowball fights will encourage more children to play outdoors.
After young Dane made his argument, The Associated Press reported that the town voted unanimously to lift the ban.

His presentation was about three minutes.
The original town law made snowballs illegal to throw because they were classified as missiles. An updated or amended version of the ordinance will exclude “any spherical object formed from snow created by scooping snow with the hands, and compacting it into a roughly fist-sized ball.”
“I think it’s an outdated law,” Dane said. “I want to be able to throw a snowball without getting in trouble.”
Dane throws the first legal snowball in a century
When the meeting adjourned, Dane and his brother Dax were given the chance to throw the first legal snowballs since amending the ordinance – a historic moment for the town of Severance! Mayor Don McLeod allowed the boys the first throw.
How many of us are annoyed by laws that don’t seem to make much sense on their face, or are puzzled as to how they ever came into existence? This peculiar nearly century-old law in Colorado certainly belongs in that category.
9-year-old Dane just wanted to do something most other little boys and girls do in the winter throughout the United States, and by asking questions about why he couldn’t have snowball fights, he won a small victory for the kids in his town.

So you think you can’t fight city hall? Don’t tell that to Dane Best.
