Republican presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy took on Mitt Romney after the Senator from Utah claimed that the most important thing America can do strategically in regard to Russia is continue supporting Ukraine.

Romney’s continued backing of a “Ukraine First” foreign policy disguised as a strategic plus for the United States cropped up during a town hall-style event with executives from Strider Technologies.

Strider offers technology and intelligence solutions for organizations and governments around the world. Romney touted the appearance as a chance to discuss the looming threat posed by the Chinese Communist Party.

“The single most important thing we can do to strengthen ourselves (America) relative to China is to see Russia defeated in Ukraine,” Romney told the crowd in attendance. “Because they’re allies. And Russia being weakened, weakens their ally, China.”

Senator Romney (R-UT) went on to state that the $113 billion in aid to Ukraine (and counting) is “about the best national defense spending I think we’ve ever done.”

Ramaswamy Pounces On Romney’s Comments

Vivek Ramaswamy, the biotech entrepreneur who is taking the Republican presidential primaries by storm, responded to Romney’s comments on X, the social media platform previously known as Twitter.

“Wrong again, [Senator Romney],” he began.

“The single most important thing we can do to strengthen America relative to China is to disband the Russia-China military alliance & reduce our economic dependence on China,” said Ramaswamy. “Instead we’re driving Russia further into China’s hands by the day while [President Biden] sleepwalks us into a major conflict.”

He then accused the GOP establishment, of which Romney is a card-carrying member, of “aiding and abetting” the President in escalating the crisis.

Ramaswamy has previously stated his position that supporting Ukraine is “not” a vital part of American foreign policy and argued that the more crucial aspect of securing our nation is energy independence.

“This war is a symptom of America’s lack of self-sufficiency,” he recently said, answering a questionnaire by former Fox News host Tucker Carlson. “Putin is a tyrant and started this needless war, but he did so because we created incentives that tipped the balance of his decision.”

Ramaswamy further suggested that extending the war, as American war-mongers are so keen on doing, is actually beneficial to China.

“China wants the Ukraine war to last as long as possible to deplete Western military capacity before invading Taiwan,” the rising GOP star argued. “It’s working: we think we appear stronger by helping Ukraine, but we actually become weaker vis-à-vis China.”

GOP Is Fractured On Ukraine

Senator Romney’s comments are in line with the old guard in the Republican party, which supports endless wars in foreign nations with little regard for American taxpayer money.

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) has said that he’s “sorry public opinion is sliding,” but the war effort in Ukraine and America’s continued support is “enormously important.”

How important?

“The single most important event going on in the world right now,” he said in a Fox News interview back in February.

Ramaswamy’s criticism of Romney puts him more in line with new guard GOP candidates like Florida Governor Ron DeSantis (R) and former President Donald Trump, who have each opposed blank checks to Ukraine.

“While the U.S. has many vital national interests – securing our borders, addressing the crisis of readiness within our military, achieving energy security and independence, and checking the economic, cultural, and military power of the Chinese Communist Party – becoming further entangled in a territorial dispute between Ukraine and Russia is not one of them,” DeSantis wrote in his response to Carlson.

Trump, likewise, suggested funding the war in Ukraine is not a vital part of American policy and demanded Europe start subsidizing the effort at an at least equal rate.

“It is for Europe,” he said when asked if support for Ukraine is important. “But not for the United States. That is why Europe should be paying far more than we are, or equal.”

“We should support regime change in the United States, that’s far more important,” added Trump. “The Biden administration are the ones who got us into this mess.”

Trump recently praised Ramaswamy for his debate performance in which he described the former President as “the best president of the 21st Century” and led all of the other candidates in stating he would support Trump as a presidential candidate even if he were convicted in the latest Democrat indictment schemes.

Ramaswamy has been surging in the polls, with his whole-hearted defense of Trump being a significant reason why.

His opposition to siphoning off taxpayer dollars to Ukraine, especially as the public grows more leery of that financial support, is likely another reason he is performing so well.
