El Salvador’s President Nayib Bukele, who once described his own country as “Third World,” is saying that the United States has lost the moral high ground regarding democracy.
Bukele’s comments are in response to the Colorado Supreme Court’s decision Tuesday to remove former President Donald Trump from their 2024 presidential ballot based on a wild misinterpretation of alleged violations of the 14th Amendment.
Section 3 of the 14th Amendment is a rarely cited Civil War-era provision that bars individuals from holding office if they “have engaged in insurrection or rebellion” or “given aid or comfort to the enemies thereof.”
The court determined that Trump is ineligible to be on the ballot for president in a 4-3 decision.
“The United States has lost its ability to lecture any other country about ‘democracy,'” Bukele posted to the X social media platform.
He placed the word “democracy” in quotes.

World Leaders React With Shock After Trump Removed From Ballot
Bukele wasn’t the only world leader to express shock following the Colorado Supreme Court ruling that Trump be removed from the state’s ballot.
Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán was so astounded by the news that he suggested that it couldn’t possibly be real.
“Is this fake news?” he asked in a post to X. “Keep on fighting, [Former President Trump]! The world needs you!”
Meanwhile, Trump’s Republican primary opponents, who need to find every political angle possible to have an outside shot of earning the nomination, were even disgusted by the Colorado Supreme Court ruling.
Biotech entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy slammed the decision and vowed to remove himself from Colorado’s primary ballot.
“In an un-American, unconstitutional, and unprecedented decision, a cabal of Democrat judges are barring Trump from the ballot in Colorado,” he said.
“Having tried every trick in the book to eliminate President Trump from running in this election, the bipartisan Establishment is now deploying a new tactic to bar him from ever holding office again,” he continued.
Nikki Haley, according to the Des Moines Register said, “We don’t need to have judges making these decisions, we need voters to make these decisions.”
Florida Governor Ron DeSantis also criticized the activist court ruling.
“The Left invokes ‘democracy’ to justify its use of power, even if it means abusing judicial power to remove a candidate from the ballot based on spurious legal grounds,” he said. “SCOTUS should reverse.”
Even former New Jersey Governor Chris Christie, one of the most vocal critics of Trump, disagreed with the attempt to keep his rival off the ballot.
“I do not believe Donald Trump should be prevented from being president of the United States by any court,” Christie said. “I think he should be prevented from being president of the United States by the voters of this country.”
What Will The Supreme Court Do?
Bukele’s comments regarding the Colorado ruling preventing Trump from being on the ballot show that the United States is now a punchline when it comes to Democrat claims to be champions of “democracy.”
America is a laughingstock.
Bukele has previously mocked the Joe Biden administration for pursuing political opponents through rogue prosecutions.
“Think what you want about former President Trump and the reasons he’s being indicted,” Bukele wrote on X. “But just imagine if this happened in any other country, where a government arrested the main opposition candidate.”
Trump Campaign Spokesman Steven Cheung said that they would be appealing to the Supreme Court.
“The Colorado Supreme Court issued a completely flawed decision tonight and we will swiftly file an appeal to the United States Supreme Court and a concurrent request for a stay of this deeply undemocratic decision,” he stated.
“We have full confidence that the U.S. Supreme Court will quickly rule in our favor and finally put an end to these unAmerican lawsuits,” he added.
Former White House lawyer Ty Cobb, who has been critical of Trump’s role in the so-called “insurrection,” has said that the Colorado Supreme Court ruling is so flawed that he expects the Supreme Court to overturn it in overwhelming fashion.
“I think this case will be handled quickly. I think it could be 9-0 in the Supreme Court for Trump,” Cobb said in an interview on CNN, adding later, “I do believe it could be 9-0, because I think the law is clear.”
Trump has not been charged with “insurrection” and was acquitted by the Senate in his impeachment trial regarding the matter.
The ruling has been stayed until January 4th.
