Winsome Sears Says Americans Are ‘Tired of Politicians Who Won’t Let The Wounds Of The Past Heal’

Virginia’s Republican Lt. Gov.-elect Winsome Sears, the first black woman to hold the post, recently said that she was elected in part because many Americans are tired of politicians who are more interested in stoking division instead of letting the country’s racial wounds heal.

Winsome made her remarks during an interview on Fox News Sunday.

Sears: ‘Nobody is denying that we don’t want to hear all the history… We don’t have to tear one person down in order to build another up’

Host Chris Wallace asked Sears, “What do you think Virginia voters were saying on Election Day when they made you lieutenant governor?”

Sears replied, “They’re tired of the black against white and the Asian against Latino. They’re tired of it, and they’re tired of politicians who won’t let the wounds of the past heal.”

“Nobody is denying that we don’t want to hear all the history,” Winsome explained. “I certainly do not want the sins of the past to be repeated.”

Sears then said she seeks a more positive path when talking and dealing with painful parts of America’s past.

“We don’t have to tear one person down in order to build another up,” the Republican observed. “That is no way to be. That is not America.”

Sears: ‘Everything that I’ve had I had to work for, no one gave me anything’

Sears added, “Everything that I’ve had I had to work for, no one gave me anything.”

At rally, Sears told the crowd, “In case you haven’t noticed, I am black, and I have been black all my life. That is not what this is about.”

“Sometimes what happens to you isn’t because you are black or a woman. It is simply life. I mean, some days you are the pigeon, and some days you are the statue,” Sears said.

“It is just life,” she added.
