On Wednesday, former President Donald Trump harshly criticized the ongoing Russian invasion of Ukraine, saying that Russia should immediately cease fighting. He called the situation a “holocaust.”

During the interview with Fox Business Channel’s Maria Bartiromo, Trump stated that the Russians must “stop killing people,” and that he thought there could be some sort of an agreement between the two nations to end the conflict.

In Depth Interview

Trump and Bartiromo discussed several topics, but the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict was at the top of the list. Trump stated that, “something could be done with [Russia] right now.”

When Bartiromo pressed him for an answer, he said, “Well, you have to work out a deal. They have to stop killing these people. They’re killing all of these people, and they have to stop it, and they have to stop it now.” He added, “Putin is playing Biden like a drum and it’s not a pretty thing to watch.”

Trump continued with harsh words for President Joe Biden’s handling of the crisis, saying,

“But they don’t respect the United States and the United States is like, I don’t know, they’re not doing anything about it. This is a — this is a holocaust. This is a horrible thing that’s happening. You’re witnessing and you’re seeing it on television every night.”

Ukraine And NATO

Donald Trump did not say whether he thinks that Ukraine should become a member of NATO, simply saying it would be a “decision that would have to be made.” He also said that, “Right now, it would be a lot easier to say yes than it would have been six months ago.”

Trump praised Ukranian President Volodymyr Zelensky, saying, “He’s a brave man, he’s hanging in.” He also referenced his 2019 phone call with Zelensky and said he was “very impressed by him.”

Different President Different Outcome?

President Trump has said on multiple occasions that Putin would not have attacked Ukraine had he still been the President. And a recent Harvard Center for American Political Studies (CAPS)- Harris poll may prove that to be true.

The poll showed that 62% of Americans believe the Russian invasion of Ukraine would never have happened on Donald Trump’s watch.

The poll also showed that 59% of Americans believe that Putin chose his timing because he believes Joe Biden is weak.

Trump also called the Biden administration’s response to the invasion with sanctions a “pretty weak statement.”
