The hashtag #ReleaseTheMemo has been making its way around the twittersphere, putting pressure on Congress to release a much-publicized (but not seen by the American public) memo detailing alleged FISA court abuses under the Barack Obama Administration.

Republicans in Congress were reportedly shocked by what they read – and it’s no surprise they want the memo released to the public while Democrats are fighting to keep it secret.

President Trump was famously mocked for alleging that Trump Tower was wiretapped, but not long after we learned that various members of the Trump campaign were in fact under surveillance, and a secret FBI counterintelligence investigation was launched into his campaign.

And now we have texts from anti-Trump FBI agent Peter Strzok referring to a “secret society” within the FBI meeting after the election to help thwart Trump.

Things seem just a tad suspicious – and releasing the memo could sure help clear up some of the confusion. Among them calling for its publication is President Donald Trump, and that could guarantee its release.

According to The Blaze,

Trump last week told Attorney General Jeff Sessions, via White House chief of staff John Kelly, to release the memo, also known as the “secret FISA memo.”

The Post noted that Trump’s directive contradicts the Department of Justice’s position on the matter. The agency has said releasing the classified memo without official review would be “extraordinarily reckless.”

A “senior administration official” who spoke to the Post anonymously said Trump “is inclined to have that released just because it will shed light” on the FBI’s Trump-Russia investigation.

While Trump’s message was relayed to Sessions, it’s ultimately Congress (specifically the House Intelligence Committee) who has the authority to release the memo. If they vote to do so, it’ll require Trump’s signature for final approval.

Republican Congressman Dave Joyce said last week that it will take 19 congressional working days to go through the process to release the classified document, which means that it wouldn’t be released until at least March.
