Tlaib Supports ‘Direct Payment’ For Slavery Reparations

Rep. Rashida Tlaib said she supports any form of reparations for slavery, but noted her constituents particularly would like to see “direct payment.”

No surprise there. Of course, Democrats want to hand out free money in an attempt to buy votes.

Tlaib (D-MI) was being interviewed by political correspondent, Nicholas Ballasy, regarding House Resolution 40, a bill recently resubmitted earlier this year by Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee (D-TX), which would create a ‘reparations commission.’

The text of the resolution, co-sponsored by Tlaib and 54 other Democrats, states that it would “establish a commission to study and consider a national apology and proposal for reparations for the institution of slavery.”

Direct Payment

Ballasy inquired as to how the apology and/or reparations should be paid, and which method the Michigan lawmaker would support.

“I support any opportunity for restorative justice, and that could come up all above in some instances,” the congresswoman replied. “But I think there is a serious conversation happening in the committee and I hope continues to happen regarding reparations.”

“I guess it should be determined by all of us,” Tlaib further pondered. “And I can tell you at home it is direct payment that people want to see, but also increased access to higher education to real equitable funding in education systems right now across the country.”

Tlaib went on to suggest that even though nobody in our lifetime has experienced slavery, the black community is still held down by its effects all these years later.

“This is something that is very rooted in trying to combat what’s happened to black Americans, continues to happen with black Americans being not actually been able to get on a level playing field — on the same level after ending slavery,” she insisted.

House Hearing on Reparations

Last week, the House Subcommittee on the Constitution, Civil Rights and Civil Liberties held a hearing on reparations featuring speakers Ta-Nehisi Coates and actor Danny Glover, among others.

The goal was to examine a “path to restorative justice” for victims of slavery.

NFL great Burgess Owens, also a guest at the hearing, blasted the Democrat party saying they should be the only ones held responsible in paying reparations due to “all the misery” they’ve caused blacks throughout history.

Tlab

Democrats are the party that supported slavery. They are the party of Jim Crow. And they are the party that fought against civil rights.

It should be interesting to see if Tlaib and her colleagues will open up their wallets and provide ‘direct payment’ to their constituents.
