Two hundred thirty years ago, George Washington issued his Farewell Address, solemnly warning Americans against the "baneful effects of the spirit of party." He cautioned that political factions distract public councils, enfeeble administration, and open doors to foreign influence and corruption, allowing cunning men to subvert the people's power. Washington feared parties would replace the nation's will with minority agendas, fostering jealousy, riots, and eventual despotism.
