Snopes “Fact Checks” Christian Satire Website Babylon Bee

As part of their efforts to combat what they consider to be “fake news,” Facebook has partnered with a number of fact-checking organizations to monitor when fake stories are gaining traction.

Facebook still has plenty to work to do though in determining what is really “fake.” For instance, articles from the website The Onion are deliberately fake for satirical purposes, and are usually so ridiculous that a reader can figure out for themselves that what they’re reading is a joke.

Another popular satirical site that I’ve seen popping up lately is the “Babylon Bee,” which could be best described as a Christian-themed version of The Onion. They recently published a piece titled “CNN Purchases Industrial-Sized Washing Machine To Spin News Before Publication,” which was hilarious, but not as hilarious as the fact that Facebook was concerned people might mistake it for a real news story.

According to The Federalist,

The uptight jerks over at Snopes decided to fact check the Bee’s claim, to ensure that no one actually thought that CNN “made a significant investment in heavy machinery.” Uh, okay. Thanks, Snopes! Would’ve totally fallen for that one!

Hours later, Adam Ford, who runs The Babylon Bee, got a notification warning him that the post had been flagged as so-called “fake news” by Snopes, and that if it happened again, the Bee’s Facebook page could face de-monetization and its posts would suffer a reduced reach.

Not only did Facebook threaten to punish the Bee, the social network has also been warning its users who click on the obviously satirical post that it is, in fact, satire.

The Bee has since fired back at the absurdity of the situation with a new article of their own: “Mark Zuckerberg Finishes Another Long Day Of Deciding What People Should Believe.”

I’m not quite sure that one is satire, though.
