Shepard Smith Suggests Trump’s Treatment of Illegal Children Comparable to War Criminals

Fox News anchor Shepard Smith on Monday likened the Trump administration’s treatment of illegal immigrant children to that of war criminals in violation of the Geneva Conventions.

Smith was particularly outraged over reports that lawyers visiting a detention center in Texas found children lacking basic necessities such as soap and toothbrushes.

Department of Justice lawyer Sarah Fabian argued before the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals that the administration was not required to provide detained children with such amenities.

Shep was outraged.

Geneva Conventions

“Soap and toothbrushes are not optional for children in detention. They are necessary,” he fumed. “Were these particular children prisoners of war rather than innocent children, failure to provide those necessities would be a violation of the Geneva Conventions.”

Here’s the thing, chief. They’re not prisoners of war. They’re not prisoners of anything. They’re being held until they can be processed by an overloaded system, kept safe from parents (or adults using them) who brought them on an ill-advised, life-threatening criminal act.

“Yet President Trump claims his administration is doing a fantastic job under the circumstances,” Smith snidely commented.

As per usual, Smith’s melodramatic act is misplaced and misinformed.

President Trump explained that Congress has the power to fix these difficult circumstances by securing the border. A simple enough request, not only from him but the American people who want to see something done.

“If the Democrats would change the asylum laws and the loopholes, which they refuse to do because they think it’s good politics, everything would be solved immediately,” Trump explained. “But they refuse to do it.”

Even better – Where was Shep’s outrage when this same lawyer, arguing for Barack Obama’s Justice Department in 2015, tried to argue that ICE should have the power to put illegal children in solitary confinement?

Was Obama equivalent to someone in violation of the Geneva Conventions? Was he comparable to a war criminal?

Embarrassment for Fox

Smith is a perpetual embarrassment for Fox News.

This past November, he mocked those concerned about the humanitarian crisis at the southern border.

“There is no invasion. No one’s coming to get you. There’s nothing at all to worry about,” he condescended.

Nothing to worry about? Tell that to Kate Steinle or the grieving family of Mollie Tibbetts.
