Sanders: America Has Duty to Rebuild United Nations

Bernie Sanders

Speaking at the Democratic debate in Iowa on Tuesday, Senator Bernie Sanders said it was the duty of America to “rebuild the United Nations.”

“We Need an International Coalition”

Sanders put himself up against Joe Biden and other pro-war candidates from the start of the debate, by railing against the constant need to start foreign wars that the US government and deep state seems to have.

“What we have to face as a nation, is that there were two great foreign policy disasters of our lifetime – the war in Vietnam and the war in Iraq,” Sanders said. “Both of those were based on lies, and right now what I fear very much is that we have a President who is lying again and could drag us into a war that is even worse than Iraq.”

“What we need to do is have an international coalition,” he added. “We cannot keep acting unilaterally. As you know, the nuclear deal with Iran was worked on with a number of our allies. We have got to undo what Trump did, bring that coalition together, and make sure that Iran never gets a nuclear weapon.”

The UN is a Talking Shop!

Later in the debate, he said something eminently sensible, which was pointing out the obvious fact that “the American people are sick and tired of endless wars which have cost us trillions of dollars.”

However, he followed it up with something rather stupid.

“Our job is to rebuild the United Nations and rebuild the State Department, make sure we have the capability of bringing the world together to resolve international conflict diplomatically and stop the endless wars,” Sanders continued.

Sanders is right about the need to stop the “endless wars” in the Middle East, but is completely wrong on the United Nations!

The UN is just a talking shop where nothing ever gets done. Israel is named as the number one human rights abuser, yet China, Saudi Arabia and others get off scot free! International organisations are not always a bad idea (see NATO), but the more countries get involved, the more bureaucratic it gets, and the less action it actually takes.

The UN is an old, tired institution from the last century, and it should stay there.
