Republicans Introduce Resolution To Censure Ilhan Omar, Squad Over Comments Comparing US To Hamas

House Republicans have introduced a resolution seeking to censure Representative Ilhan Omar and other members of the 'Squad' for comments backing "the actions of a recognized terrorist organization."

House Republicans have introduced a resolution seeking to censure far-left Representative Ilhan Omar and other members of the ‘Squad’ for comments backing “the actions of a recognized terrorist organization.”

The resolution stems from several tweets by each Squad member regarding Israel’s efforts to defend itself from Hamas.

The resolution also states that “Omar accused the United States of backing crimes against humanity.”

The censure notes that fellow Squad members Reps. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY), Ayanna Pressley (D-MA), and Rashida Tlaib (D-MI) have made disparaging comments about America’s ally in Israel.

Ocasio-Cortez was cited for accusing Israel of ”human rights abuses,” while Tlaib reportedly accused the Government of Israel of “‘ethnic cleansing’ against Palestinians,” and Pressley was blamed for equating support of Israel to “supporting oppression, violence, and apartheid.”

The resolution seeking censure of Omar and the Squad was introduced by Reps. Michael Waltz (R-FL), Jim Banks (R-IN), and Claudia Tenney (R-NY).

“We cannot turn a blind eye to Members of Congress openly defending terrorist attacks by Hamas against our close ally Israel nor their dangerous rhetoric which has contributed to anti-Semitic attacks across the country,” Waltz said in a statement.

Ilhan Omar Censure Likely To Be Blocked By Democrats

Ilhan Omar kicked off the calls to be censured through comments in which she seemed to equate the United States and Israel to the Taliban and Hamas.

“We must have the same level of accountability and justice for all victims of crimes against humanity,” she tweeted. “We have seen unthinkable atrocities committed by the U.S., Hamas, Israel, Afghanistan, and the Taliban.”

A caucus of Jewish Democrats discussed condemning Omar for those remarks, with a dozen ultimately putting their name to a statement doing so.

Omar and the Squad remained defiant initially, accusing their fellow Democrats of being racists and Islamophobes.

“The islamophobic tropes in this statement are offensive,” Omar replied to news of the letter comdening her comments. “The constant harassment [and] silencing from the signers of this letter is unbearable.”

She appeared to back down a bit afterward when House Speaker Nancy seemingly rebuked Omar with a warning that “false equivalencies” between the United States and the Taliban are unacceptable.

“I was in no way equating terrorist organizations with democratic countries with well-established judicial systems,” Omar insisted.

Democrats Are Rallying Around Omar

Democrats though, as they so often do, have instead rallied around Omar and refused to hold her accountable for her anti-American, anti-Israel remarks.

Pelosi insisted in an interview with CNN’s Dana Bash that she didn’t “rebuke” the Minnesota congresswoman after all and simply thanked her for clarifying the statement.

She went on to define Omar as “a valued member of our caucus.”

Fox News contributor Guy Benson mocked Pelosi for having lost to Omar on two occasions now.

Benson writes that Pelosi is “evidently quite anxious to avoid any strife with the Squad, keenly aware that her thin majority cannot afford defections or whip count drama, so she’s now insisting that her mild rebuke of Omar wasn’t even a rebuke at all.”

“She is actively arguing that there was no accountability delivered,” he states.

You may recall that in 2019 Pelosi and the Democrats, in trying to protect Omar from a string of anti-Semitic statements back then, produced a completely watered-down resolution that failed to mention her by name and instead included condemnation of all forms of ‘hate.’

Omar was so pleased with her efforts in getting the Democrats to bend the knee that she was seen celebrating on the House floor after voting ‘yes’ on the resolution which was originally meant to condemn her.

Fox News reports that the current censure resolution “is very unlikely to pass” because “some of the moderate Democrats who were condemning her say they accept it and want to move on.”

They go so far as to state that Democrats plan to “block” the resolution.

Additionally, it appears Democrats are pulling the same stunt they pulled in 2019 in protecting Omar by watering down condemnations with other supposed examples of controversial speech.

NBC News reports that Rep. Brad Schneider (D-IL) is expected to unveil a “dueling” resolution that would censure Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) for comments last month comparing House mask rules to the Holocaust.

Ocasio-Cortez was never censured for comparing ICE detainment facilities to “concentration camps,” but Greene, in the eyes of the Democrat Party, has crossed a red line and must be held accountable.

Greene has been punished for previous controversial comments, removed from all committee assignments for statements she made prior to her election to Congress.
