Report: US Marshals May ‘Round Up And Arrest’ Trump Aides That Ignore January 6 Panel Subpoenas

Representative Stephanie Murphy says US Marshals may be utilized to round up and arrest aides to former President Trump if they ignore subpoenas.

Representative Stephanie Murphy, one of the majority members of the House select committee investigating the Capitol riot on January 6th, said US Marshals may be utilized to round up and arrest aides to former President Trump if they ignore subpoenas.

Raw Story reported on Murphy’s comments, which they say explain “how Donald Trump’s allies might be rounded up and arrested” if they defy the subpoenas.

The committee investigating the event surrounding the Capitol riot issued subpoenas to four former aides to President Donald Trump in late September.

Those receiving subpoenas for documents and testimony include former White House chief of staff Mark Meadows, former Trump adviser Steve Bannon, former communications official Dan Scavino, and former Defense Department official Kash Patel.

“We have engaged with a wide variety of law enforcement offices, including the U.S. Marshals, in order to issue the subpoenas,” Murphy said in an interview with MSNBC when asked about anyone who fails to comply.

“We will use everything, as you said, with all due respect, we will use all of the agencies and all of the tools at our disposal to issue the subpoenas and enforce them.”

Trump Aides Arrested By US Marshals?

Murphy went on to say that she and the committee are demanding information from those Trump aides, who have only been accused thus far of “working in or (having) communications with the White House on or in the days leading up to the January 6th insurrection.”

“I want to know how much planning was involved, who was involved in the planning, who funded it,” she asserted.

“How they – what their intent was when they came into that day, and then what they knew as that day unfolded and the safety and security of people like the vice president and members of Congress were at risk, [and] what they did, either to respond or not respond on that occasion.”

A report surfaced earlier this month claiming all four of the Trump aides were prepared to ignore or openly defy the subpoenas issued by the January 6 committee.

The former President’s aides, supposedly at Trump’s direction, were said to be prepared to defy the subpoenas based on executive privilege grounds.

Criminal Contempt

Murphy may have ratcheted up the rhetoric by suggesting US Marshals could be used to go after Trump aides, but it’s really just a continuation of what the committee has been saying all along.

Committee member Adam Schiff (D-CA) warned that the panel was “prepared to go forward and urge the Justice Department to criminally prosecute anyone who does not do their lawful duty.”

Representative Liz Cheney (Orange Man Bad-WY), echoed those sentiments earlier this week.

“In general, people are going to have to appear, or, you know, we will move contempt charges against them,” she told reporters at the U.S. Capitol.

Bannon, however, has said he will not provide testimony or documents until a court weighs in on the matter of executive privilege.

“That is an issue between the committee and President Trump’s counsel and Mr. Bannon is not required to respond at this time,” a lawyer for the former adviser said.

CNN is reporting that if Bannon does not show, “the committee is expected to immediately begin seeking a referral for criminal contempt after the subpoena deadline passes — essentially making an example of Bannon’s noncompliance as the House seeks more witnesses.”

The deadline is Thursday.
