President Trump Wins On PPP Funding, Pelosi And Schumer Lose Again

The deal was reached Tuesday morning.

Tuesday morning President Trump won his second victory over House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) and Senator Chuck Schumer (D-NY) on virus funding, as the Democrats surrendered and agreed to stop trying to insert leftist non-virus funding into the coronavirus small business funding bill.

The deal includes $310 billion for the Small Business Administration’s Paycheck Protection Program (PPP); $60 billion set aside for small lenders and community financial institutions; $50 billion for the Economic Injury Disaster Loan program; $25 billion for COVID-19 testing; and $75 billion for hospitals.

President Trump urged Congress to pass the bill: “After I sign this Bill, we will begin discussions on the next Legislative Initiative with fiscal relief…to State/Local Governments for lost revenues from COVID 19, much needed Infrastructure Investments for Bridges, Tunnels, Broadband, Tax Incentives for Restaurants, Entertainment, Sports, and Payroll Tax Cuts to increase Economic Growth.”

GOP Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) savored his victory: “I am encouraged that Democratic leaders have finally agreed to reopen the Paycheck Protection Program and abandon a number of their unrelated demands.”

Why Pelosi and Schumer embarked on this doomed legislative course of meaningless delay is anyone’s guess, as this was almost exactly the same outcome as happened mere weeks ago when they lost the first coronavirus funding battle. The dance goes like this: The White House proposes a reasonable plan, Democrats call the president insane, constituents and businesses start to lobby Congress to accept the plan, Democrats say they will never accept the plan, the White House opens negotiations, Democrats call the president a racist and vow they will never surrender, the Democrats surrender.

Protests from coast to coast on Tuesday no doubt brought pressure on Democrats to bend a knee and give in. Protesting voters want state governments to reopen businesses, schools, and pave the way for a return to normal lifestyles. But that can’t happen if businesses close forever before they get PPP funding. Now they will get the funding over the bulldozed political bodies of the Democrats. America wins.
