NYT Op-Ed Calls ‘Landslide Liz’ Cheney A ‘Hero,’ Touts Her Moral Superiority Over WY Voters

As Rep. Liz Cheney (R-WY) begins to map out her post-congressional life, she is getting lots of love from her friends in the liberal media, like the New York Times. Cheney went down to a massive defeat on Tuesday night in the Wyoming primary, losing to Harriet Hageman by a whopping 37 points.

But you’d be mistaken to think she really lost. She really won, you see.

On Wednesday, the New York Times ran an op-ed titled, “In the Ways That Count, Liz Cheney Won.” It sounds a lot like when Democrats lose elections, and the media explain to the uneducated rubes why they actually won.

‘She Won In All The Ways That Count’

The New York Times, the same people who pushed the Russia collusion hoax and a host of other fantasies about Donald Trump, his family, and his presidency for years, are now touting the existence of morality and ethics. 

The op-ed states that Cheney “chose the tough world of truth over Donald Trump’s underworld of lies.” It continues, saying that Cheney’s “cleareyed vision to see Trump for what he is…makes her a champion in the ways that count most. Come January, she will no longer be Representative Cheney because she represents steadfast principle in an era with a devastating deficit of it.”

Then comes the obligatory implication that average Republicans, those toothless MAGA hat-wearing fools in their stupidity and moral inferiority, could not possibly recognize the “correct” people to vote for, a.k.a., Cheney.  

“…there could be no dispute, at least not among honest and sensible patriots, about the correctness of her positions on Trump, on her party’s fealty to him and on the peril that he poses to the future of American democracy.”

In Other Ridiculous News…

What also might be equally amusing is that following her landslide defeat on Tuesday night, Cheney has floated the idea of a 2024 presidential run. 

Proving that the Cheney fanfiction isn’t limited to the New York Times, The Hill actually ran a piece with this ridiculous claim: “Liz Cheney shakes up 2024 forecast.”

Fact check: False. Ridiculous. Preposterous. 

GOP strategist Keith Naughton summed it up nicely for the folks at The Hill:

“Her running for president is a joke. She would get almost nothing in a Republican primary. The only thing that she would do if she ran as a Republican is help throw the nomination to Trump by taking up some protest votes that could go to [Florida Gov. Ron] DeSantis or [former Vice President Mike] Pence.”

You don’t have to be a seasoned political veteran with 40 years of experience under your belt to know that.

End Of An Era

Regardless of what Liz Cheney’s plans are next, her defeat has much deeper meaning than the left’s newfound love for her. Fox News commentator Charlie Kirk called it a “mass repudiation of the Bush-Cheney-McCain era.” 

The sanctimonious New York Times op-ed seems to echo the Bush-Cheney-McCain era idea of losing with honor by saying:

“The losers on Tuesday night were the Republican Party, which needs her more than she needs it, and the United States, which needs rescue from its ruinous indulgence of Trump. Cheney has made that case as forcefully as anyone, holding on to the greatest prize of all: her dignity.”

Wrong again.
