New Texas Abortion Law Sends Pelosi And Biden Scrambling For Federal Action

Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) and President Joe Biden came out swinging against the Supreme Court’s decision to allow Texas’ ban on most abortions to remain in place on Wednesday.

The House Speaker, who purports to be Catholic, called the decision to allow the pro-life legislation to stand a “cowardly, dark-of-night decision.”

The law bans abortions after a fetal heartbeat can be detected, which can sometimes be as early as six weeks.

Pelosi Vows Action

In response, Pelosi vowed to pass the “Women’s Health Protection Act” when the House is back in session as an attempt to codify Roe v. Wade, giving it a larger shield of protection from the Supreme Court.

Of the Texas law, Pelosi said:

“SB8 unleashes one of the most disturbing, unprecedented and far-reaching assaults on health care providers – and on anyone who helps a woman, in any way, access an abortion – by creating a vigilante bounty system that will have a chilling effect on the provision of any reproductive health care services.

This provision is a cynical, backdoor attempt by partisan lawmakers to evade the Constitution and the law to destroy not only a woman’s right to health care but potentially any right or protection that partisan lawmakers target.”

Pelosi’s problem will not be in the House, but in the Senate, with the 50-50 party split.

President Biden Also Weighs In

President Joe Biden, whose defenders have described him as a “devout Catholic,” is also furious about the pro-life law.

Biden said the law “blatantly violates the constitutional rights of women.”

In a statement on Wednesday, Biden said, “And, outrageously, it deputizes private citizens to bring lawsuits against anyone who they believe has helped another person get an abortion, which might even include family members, health care workers, front desk staff at a health care clinic, or strangers with no connection to the individual.”

The President added, “My administration is deeply committed to the constitutional right established in Roe v. Wade nearly five decades ago and will protect and defend that right.”

Democrats Cry Racism

Pelosi, Biden, and even Vice President Kamala Harris claimed that the law would most hurt “women of color.” The statement from Nancy Pelosi reads, “SB8 delivers catastrophe to women in Texas, particularly women of color and women from low-income communities.  Every woman, everywhere has the constitutional right to basic health care.”

Joe Biden echoed those sentiments, “The Texas law will significantly impair women’s access to the health care they need, particularly for communities of color and individuals with low incomes.”

Vice President Kamala Harris also appeared to be reading from the same talking points: “This law will dramatically reduce access to reproductive care for women in Texas, particularly for women with low incomes and women of color.”

As might be expected in such a case, the court voted along ideological lines 5-4 with Chief Justice John Roberts siding with the three liberal judges in dissent.
