Lucretia Hughes Klucken, whose 19-year-old son Emmanuel was killed by a felon with an illegally obtained weapon in 2016, spoke out passionately against gun control before Congress, indicating such policies do not save lives.

Her testimony came before last month’s House Committee on Oversight and Reform hearing on ‘the gun violence epidemic.’

“A convicted felon killed [my son] with an illegally obtained gun,” she conveyed. “Gun control lobbyists and politicians claim their policies will save lives and reduce violence. Well, these policies did not protect my son.”

Mother Blasts Gun Control Advocates

Hughes called out some lawmakers who in one breath are calling for defunding police while simultaneously seeking to disarm law-abiding citizens.

“You who call for more gun control are the same ones that call to defund the police. Who is supposed to protect me?” she asked.

“We must prepare to be our own first responders to protect ourselves and our loved ones,” added Hughes. “I am a legal, law-abiding citizen. I don’t need the government to save me.”

Hughes went on to suggest gun control laws have failed to halt violence within the black community and those law-abiding people who “look like me” are often victims.

“How about letting me defend myself against evil? Do you think I’m not capable or trustworthy to handle firearms?” she asked. “Do you think the Second Amendment does not apply to people that look like me?”

Parkland Dad Agrees

Hughes’ powerful testimony was reminiscent of that delivered by Andrew Pollack, the father who lost his daughter in the Parkland, Florida, high school shooting.

Pollack delivered a jaw-dropping speech at the White House in 2018 in which he too argued against gun control.

“If we all work together and come up with the right idea — school safety,” he said. “It is not about gun laws. That is another fight, another battle. Let’s fix the schools and then you guys can battle it out whatever you want.”

“We need our children safe.”

Hughes’ speech was largely ignored by the mainstream media, who themselves advocate passionately for gun control.

The Washington Post buried Klucken’s testimony 10 paragraphs into their coverage and snidely commented that she was only brought in to help Republicans.

“Lucretia Hughes Klucken spoke at the invitation of the committee’s minority members, which is to say that she was there to argue against increased gun regulations,” they wrote.

The Post then dismissed her comments saying that “while her sorrow was palpable” they couldn’t help but “imagine a country filled with people who already distrust one another … who can’t agree on facts, all armed against each other in a storm of grief and anger.”

It was a subtle way to discredit her comments and argue in favor of gun control while trying to convince readers they have no bias.
