In His Own Words: MLK Supported Israel

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. is remembered for being the champion of the civil rights movement. He devoted his life to God, family and equality.

Dr. Clarence B. Jones was King’s lawyer and close friend. He is dismayed at how some attempt to rewrite history and frame Dr. King as not supporting Israel. He addressed this topic when he was honored for his civil rights work by the Israeli consulate in New York.

“I am always a little taken aback. I am seeing people quoting [Dr. King] frequently out of context to develop a thesis, an argument, that he would not be in support of the State of Israel.”

Dr. King was a strong supporter of Israel. As anti-Semitism continues raising its ugly head, it is important to revisit King’s words.

“Israel must exist and has the right to exist, and is one of the great outposts of democracy in the world.”

“Peace for Israel means security, and we must stand with all our might to protect its right to exist, its territorial integrity. I see Israel as one of the great outposts of democracy in the world, and a marvelous example of what can be done, how desert land can be transformed into an oasis of brotherhood and democracy. Peace for Israel means security and that security must be a reality.”

“When people criticize Zionists they mean Jews, you are talking anti-Semitism.”

How do you believe Dr. King would have responded to Israel’s challenges today?
