Garland, like many in the Biden administration celebrating this week, made a speech to update the American people on the activities of the DOJ surrounding the riot.

“Those involved must be held accountable, and there is no higher priority for us at the Department of Justice,” he proudly declared.

Garland, whose other priorities this past year have included a focus on systemic racism in police departments and parents upset with the curriculum and pandemic protocols in their child’s schools, then boasted of the department’s efforts in bringing rioters to justice.

The Attorney General announced the arrests of “more than 725 defendants in nearly all 50 states and the District of Columbia for their roles in the January 6 attack.”

That is simply a staggering number for a one-day event when you consider the absolute lack of concern for criminals who took part in nightly race riots throughout the previous summer.

Merrick Garland Focused on January 6 Capitol Riot

Attorney General Merrick Garland embellished his report on January 6 by noting that five police officers have died since the Capitol riot.

While technically accurate, the intent is to suggest that the officers who responded to the event died because of it.

“Five officers who responded selflessly to the attack on January 6th have since lost their lives,” he said prior to calling for a moment of silence for each.

Only unarmed Air Force veteran and avid supporter of former President Trump, Ashli Babbitt was killed that day. Garland made no mention of her.

If he were smart, Garland would address what happened to her on this, as he says, “solemn anniversary,” to prove his seriousness about bringing justice for all and to point out why the actions of some of the protesters created a dangerous situation that never should have come to fruition.

Pivots to Voting Rights

Proving that his big speech about January 6 was little more than a political hit, Merrick Garland then turned his speech into a push for voting rights legislation.

“The Department of Justice will continue to do all it can to protect voting rights with the enforcement powers we have,” he said, but insisted more must be done.

“It is essential that Congress act to give the department the powers we need to ensure that every eligible voter can cast a vote that counts.”

 

A new poll shows Americans believe there could be a repeat of the events of January 6th.

Fifty-seven percent of Americans (47 percent of Republicans, 70 percent of Democrats) believe something like the Capitol riot will happen again in the future.

The Political Insider reported earlier this week on Democrats who have pushed for erecting a memorial and educational exhibit to the riot at the Capitol and have donated items to commemorate the event to the Smithsonian.

Garland faced calls for resignation and was hauled before Congress earlier this year for weaponizing the FBI – even using “counterterrorism tools” and “tag threats” to track parents critical of their local school boards – and lying about it.

 

Senator Tom Cotton ripped Garland for his focus on American parents saying, “Thank God, you’re not on the Supreme Court.”
