After every Islamic terrorist attack we hear the inevitable “most Muslims aren’t terrorists” argument presented countless times in the media – as if everyone else wasn’t already aware of that.
It had me thinking: What if liberals applied the same obvious statement to guns? After all, there are as many guns as people in America, and out of roughly 10-12,000 gun homicides annually, certainly the percentage of guns that actually harm someone is infinitesimal.
As it turns out, a recent viral image recently dissected that, and broke down the numbers. Take a look:
When it comes to mass public shootings, after which most gun control conversations occur, the numbers are even starker. Between 1999 and 2015 (the years for which the CDC website tracks mortality rates and causes), more people were killed by:
- Urinary catheterization (67 deaths per year)
- Contact with powered lawnmower (61 per year)
- Contact with hornets, wasps and bees (58 per year)
- Legal execution (50 per year)
- Lightning (40 per year)
- Starvation (39 per year)
- Contact with hot tap-water (34 per year)
- Bitten by dog (31 per year)
- Drowning following fall into bathtub (29 per year)
- Fall while being carried by other persons (24 per year)
- KILLED IN MASS SHOOTING (23 per year)
Perhaps a chart would help with visualizing that statistic. Below is pictured the small percentage of deaths that are attributable to murder, then the even smaller percentage of murders attributable to mass public shootings.
Of course, with multiple mass shootings in recent years, including the Pulse night club and the massacre in Las Vegas, these statistics will be updated. But the point remains: The number of people killed in mass shootings in the U.S. is still quite small compared to others deaths.
And then, of course, is that pesky Second Amendment that liberals would love to overthrow if given the chance.
