The former First Lady Melania Trump has broken her silence after her beloved mother Amalia Knavs died on Tuesday at the age of 78.

Melania’s Mother Dies At 78

“It is with deep sadness that I announce the passing of my beloved mother, Amalija,” Melania wrote on social media. “Amalija Knavs was a strong woman who always carried herself with grace, warmth, and dignity.”

“She was entirely devoted to her husband, daughters, grandson, and son-in-law,” she continued. “We will miss her beyond measure and continue to honor and love her legacy.”

The former President Donald Trump also spoke out to pay tribute to Knavs.

“This is a very sad night for the entire Trump family!!!” he wrote alongside a photo of himself standing beside Knavs. “Melania’s great and beautiful mother, Amalija, has just gone to a beautiful place in the sky. She was an incredible woman, and will be missed far beyond words.”

Melania Missed NYE Celebration To Care For Her Mother

This comes after Melania missed her husband’s New Year’s Eve celebration at Mar-A-Lago last week so that she could care for her mother, with the former President Trump saying that Knavs was “very ill.”

“Hopefully, that’ll be OK, but it’s a tough one, a very tough one,” Trump said at the time, adding that Melania “sends her love” from her mother’s bedside.

“She knows probably about 95 percent of the people in this room,” he continued. “We just want to wish Amalija that she gets better as quickly as possible.”

Melania had reportedly been at her mother’s bedside since before Christmas.

“Melania has always been very devoted to her entire family,” a source close to Melania told Fox News. “It should be no surprise that she spent this Christmas with her ailing mother.”

Knavs’ Inspiring Life

Daily Mail reported that Knavs was born in Judendorf-Strassengel, Austria, and she later moved to Slovenia when it was still under communist rule. She had a humble childhood, spending it harvesting onions on her family’s farm before starting work at a textile factory, which is where she met her beloved husband Viktor.

The Knavs’ had their first daughter Ines, who now resides in New York City, in 1968 before welcoming Melania to the world in 1970. Ines and Melania moved to Milan to model, and the future First Lady, who always said that she was inspired by her hardworking mother, emigrated to the United States in 1996. Melania obtained her green card in 2001 and later became a U.S. citizen in 2006.

Amalija and her husband later moved to the United States as well, and they were by Melania’s side during her time in the White House, helping her to raise her now-17 year-old son Barron. Afterwards, they lived in retirement at their son-in-law’s Mar-A-Lago estate in Palm Beach, Florida.

“My elegant and hardworking mother Amalija introduced me to fashion and beauty,” Melania said while speaking at the Republican National Convention in 2016.

“My father, Viktor, instilled in me a passion for business and travel,” she added. “Their integrity, compassion and intelligence reflect to this day on me and for my love of family and America.”
