Mitch McConnell slammed top Democrats for blocking the coronavirus relief bill, claiming other Democrats are embarrassed by their leadership.
“Why are Democrats Filibustering the Bipartisan Bill They Helped Write?”
Speaking on the Senate floor, McConnell laid out just how much help the coronavirus bill would provide to the American people, including pushing “billions of dollars to hospitals and healthcare providers,” sending “direct checks to millions of American households,” helping to “stabilize industries to prevent mass layoffs,” and, crucially, delivering “a historic relief to small businesses to prevent their employees from being totally crushed by this pandemic.”
However, the bill was blocked by Senate Democrats yesterday, including 4 swing state Democrats.
“Democrats and Republicans sat down together, and we crafted this proposal together. Why are Democrats filibustering the bipartisan bill they helped write?” McConnell asked rhetorically. The answer was simple – the Democrats are using the coronavirus crisis as a chance to push their “wish list” through. The Democrat House Whip James Clynurn said that the crisis is “a tremendous opportunity to restrict things to fit our vision,” with another Senator noting that they have a chance to influence a $1 trillion plus package through.
McConnell explained what some of the things on their wish list were:
Tax credits for solar energy and wind energy, provisions for employees to give special and new treatment to big labor? And listen to this: new emissions standards for the airlines. Are you kidding me? This is the moment to debate new regulations that have nothing whatsoever to do with this crisis? That’s what they’re up to over there, and the Democratic people need to know it! The Democrats won’t let us fund hospitals or save small businesses unless they get to dust off the Green New Deal!
“I’d like to see Senate Democrats tell New York City doctors and nurses, who are literally overrun, that they are filibustering hospital funding for masks because they want to argue with the airlines over their carbon footprint,” McConnell added, clearly angry. “I’d like to see Senate Democrats tell seniors who have seen their hard-earned retirement savings literally melt away as the markets track toward their worst month since 1931, that they’re continuing to hold up emergency measures over tax credits for solar panels,” he continued.

McConnell: Democrats “Ought to be Embarrassed”
“They ought to be embarrassed,” McConnell said. “In fact, I’ve heard from some of them who are embarrassed, talking like this is some juicy political opportunity. This is a national emergency!”
I completely agree. The Democratic leadership are literally putting American lives at stake because they want to exploit this crisis for their own political gains. It is absolutely disgraceful that Pelosi and Schumer are behaving like this in a time of national crisis, but it is heartening to see that some Democrats know how terrible their leadership is.
