Women’s March to Lose Tax-Exempt Status Over Kavanaugh Protests

The tax-exempt status of a number of conservative groups became a target for the Obama Administration’s IRS, primarily Tea Party-related groups. After the rise of the Tea Party, they were targeted by the Obama IRS for more rigorous tax-exempt scrutiny, sparking a major controversy in 2013. While no IRS members faced consequences under the Obama administration, the Trump Justice Department announced a settlement to compensate the groups targeted in October of last year.

Meanwhile, no shortage of liberal groups abuse their tax-exempt 501(c)(3) status in advocating for political causes, violating their tax-exempt status. However, the 200+ protesters who disrupted Brett Kavanaugh’s confirmation hearing may have changed that for at least one left-wing group you’ve heard of, the anti-Trump “Women’s March.”  And it’s not just the Women’s March – the groups “the Center for Popular Democracy” and “Housing Works” also provided cash for the post-and-forfeits to protesters who didn’t show up with their own money before they faced arrest for their conduct.

According to the Daily Caller, “funds that were used to provide travel, accommodation, legal training, and bail for its [the Women’s March and others] members were used illegally. Organizing such conduct [protests] isn’t allowed under IRS rules and is “incompatible with charity and social welfare,” according to IRS rules.

According to IRS Ruling 75-384 “an organization … that planned and sponsored protest demonstrations at which members were urged to commit acts of civil disobedience did not qualify for IRC 501(c)(3) or (4) exemption.” Such activities bar an organization from being tax exempt. Campaign finance lawyer Cleta Mitchell told the Caller that “in addition to the IRS rules that they have violated, these groups should lose any government funding they receive — taxpayers should not be subsidizing bail money for people hired by these groups to break the law. There are no doubt many rules and regulations which they have violated for grantees in receipt of federal funds.”

In the past, Women’s March leader Linda Sarsour has:

  • Defended Sharia Law.
  • Spoke at the Islamic Society of North America’s 54th annual convention, where she praised Siraj Wahhaj as her personal mental. Wahhaj is listed as an unindicted co-conspirator in the 1993 World Trade Center bombing.
  • Sued someone who accused Sarsour of covering up sexual harassment.
  • Called for “Jihad” against the Trump administration.

It’s about time karma caught up to her – even if it’s over something as boring as a tax charge.

Meanwhile, those protests had zero effect on Kavanaugh’s confirmation process. The hysterics weren’t going to sway anyone. However, 111th-hour accusations of sexual misconduct have caused the confirmation process to come to a halt. It’s incredible just how much has happened in the past week. On the 16th, Christine Ford was revealed as Kavanaugh’s accuser, and the next day her lawyer said that Ford would be willing to testify before the Senate about the allegations.

That didn’t last long. Ford has since withdrawn her desire to testify, demanded the FBI investigate allegations outside their jurisdiction, and then offer to testify only all of her conditions were met. While I can’t comment on the truthfulness of her allegations (which only she and Kavanaugh know for sure with 100% certainty).

Now the same Democrats demanding Ford testify days ago are defending her decision to delay doing so as long as possible. Why? Because it’s not the truth of her allegations that Democrats are interested in – it’s indefinitely delaying Kavanaugh’s confirmation process until after the midterms (at a bare minimum).
