Illegal Immigrants From Eastern Europe And Asia Now Coming Across U.S. Southern Border

America’s wide open southern border is quickly becoming no secret to the rest of the world. A new report from Axios paints a chilling picture of the shifting dynamic and perception of who is coming across the U.S.-Mexico border illegally.

Traditionally, migrants from Mexico, Honduras, Guatemala, El Salvador, and other Central American countries make up the bulk of illegal immigration.

Axios reports that there has been an uptick in people coming from places all over the globe – like Haiti, Cuba, and even Romania  and India. 

This dramatic shift in who is attempting to break in to the United States not only has economic and humanitarian consequences, rapidly entering the mix are also possible consequences of national security.

The Biden Administration And The Numbers

A spokesman for the Department of Homeland Security insists that, “The Biden administration has made it clear that our borders are not open and individuals and families are subject to border restrictions, including expulsion.”

Apparently, the Biden administration has not made it clear enough because the numbers don’t lie.

According to the  Department of Homeland Security’s own data, in April, 33,000 people crossed the U.S.-Mexico border who were from countries other than Mexico, Guatemala, Honduras, and El Salvador. That is an increase of 9,000 since January.

So Who Is Coming Across The Border?

Romanians, who are Europe’s largest ethnic minority, seem to be the largest group of “OTM’s” (other than Mexicans) attempting to get into the U.S.

A photographer with Reuters witnessed more than 200 Romanians come across the border over a period of three weeks.

Reuters says the the Border Patrol has apprehended roughly 2,000 Romanians so this year, skyrocketing past the numbers from 2020 and 2019. 

Some are coming from as far away as parts of Asia and India. They tell tales of boarding planes that connect from places like Moscow and Paris to Mexico City, where they board other buses for a trip that will take about two days to get near the U.S.-Mexico border.

National Security Risks

In March, Axios reported that since Oct. 1 of 2020, four people who had been arrested at the border gave names matching the FBI’s Terrorist Screening Database.

Of the people being detained, three were from Yemen and one was from Serbia.

In 2018, six people were arrested on the border from Yemen and Bangladesh. A Department of Homeland Security report says that most who are flagged on the terror watchlist attempt to enter the country at airports.

On Wednesday, Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas spoke before a House Appropriations Committee hearing where Republicans pressed him about the Biden administration’s handling of the border surge.

When asked if there were any consequences for entering the country illegally by Rep. Chuck Fleischmann (R-TN), who also said, “because frankly, it appears that President Biden’s message to one and all is the U.S. has no limits to whom can come because the administration will not enforce any of its immigration laws — is that the message, that this country will not enforce its immigration laws?”

Secretary Mayorkas’ answer was,

“No, it’s not. The president could not have been clearer in his articulation of this administration’s position nor could I have been clearer and continue to be so, which is the border is closed and this administration administers and enforces the laws of the United States of America — and that is not only the laws of accountability but also the humanitarian laws that Congress passed years ago.”
