Ilhan Omar: Democrats Must ‘Grow A Backbone’ And ‘Abolish The Filibuster’

On Thursday, Democratic Congresswoman Ilhan Omar encouraged Democrats to “grow a backbone” and abolish the Senate filibuster.

The far-left “Squad” member tweeted that Democrats should not take former President Barack Obama’s approach because she believes his administration failed to enact substantive progressive change when Democrats had full control over Congress and the White House.

Omar: ‘Democrats Can’t Repeat The Mistake Of 2009’

Omar posted, “Democrats can’t repeat the mistake of 2009, we must abolish the filibuster & move legislation that helps us deliver progress for the American people,” Omar wrote. “Let’s grow a backbone.”

Omar’s comments were a response to a statement by Republican Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell who declared earlier that “100 percent of my focus is on stopping this new administration.”

McConnell himself was responding to reporter questions about Liz Cheney, and whether or not he would support the anti-Trump Rep. keeping her leadership position in the House.

McConnell was stating that he was focused on what the Biden administration was doing, not on the power struggle among House leadership.

“The president may have won the nomination, but Bernie Sanders won the argument about what the new administration should be like,” McConnell added, noting that he believes that mainstream Democrats have been taken over by the extremist far left of their party.

Particularly the socialist “Squad” Dem faction that Omar is a member of.

Democrats used budget reconciliation – a method that only requires a simple majority – to pass President Biden’s coronavirus response package without Republican support in March.

Republicans heavily criticized this, particularly considering that new President Joe Biden had constantly touted the need for bipartisanship.

Still, Democrats, however have defended the decision to push the bill, claiming progress is being stymied by Republicans.

Omar: ‘Please Stop Asking Us About Bipartisanship’

Omar responded to McConnell’s statement, saying, “Please stop asking us about bipartisanship when this is what the leader of the other party is focused on.”

Biden replied to McConnell by saying, “Look, he said that in our last administration with Barack — he was going to stop everything — and I was able to get a lot done with him.”
