How Bad Is California? Death Row ‘Gangsta Rap’ Exec Just Endorsed the GOP Attorney General Candidate

Those who read my articles regularly know I’m a huge music fan with a particular love of old-school punk rock and rock and roll. However, I am a child of the 90s, and so I remember when the musical style known as “gangsta rap” hit the scene.

Like most adults my age, I enjoyed the lyrical genius and beats of Tupac, Dr. Dre, and Snoop Dogg. Yes, for you youngsters out there, Snoop was a gangsta rapper before he was best friends with Martha Stewart.

As if it wasn’t earth-shattering enough to have Snoop Dogg participating in cooking shows with Martha Stewart, now one of the founders of Death Row Records, known to most as the record label Tupac Shakur was signed with, has endorsed a Republican for political office.

And not just any office – the candidate is the Republicans’ Attorney General candidate.

Full Circle

Michael “Harry-O” Harris recently endorsed California Republican Attorney General candidate Nathan Hochman.

Mr. Harris co-founded Death Row Records while serving time in prison.

As he says in his video endorsement, he has:

“…come full circle from the L.A. streets, to prison, now I’m back to mentor and inspire my community.”

Mr. Harris has first-hand knowledge of the criminal justice system, albeit not in the same way as his candidate of choice, Mr. Hochman. He served 30 years of a 25-to-life sentence for conspiracy to commit first-degree murder, and was released early and pardoned by President Trump last year.

None other than Snoop D-O-double-G petitioned the former President to pardon Harry-O.

Mr. Harris goes on to rightly explain in his video that:

“The choices we make impact our lives and the people around us. That’s why we need leaders who will protect our communities and help them thrive.”

Incredibly, crime has gotten so bad in California that a hardened former criminal like Mr. Harris would endorse a Republican. 

California Love

Mr. Hochman is running to replace Democratic incumbent California Attorney General Ron Bonta. Governor Gavin Newsom appointed Mr. Bonta to replace the former Attorney General Xavier Becerra when the latter was tapped to become President Biden’s Secretary for the Department of Health and Human Services.

While there is doubt that Mr. Hochman will beat out Mr. Bonta, (it is California, after all), it’s worth noting that he’s picked up this unique endorsement from Mr. Harris and the San Diego Union-Tribune editorial board, which said part of his appeal is he’s a:

“…sensible Republican who is worthy of state office in the Trump era…”

Like most California libs, Mr. Bonta is known for his social justice leanings. However, with crime rates exploding, more Californians, and Americans generally, seem concerned with actual justice.

According to the Public Policy Institute of California, gun-related homicides have risen by 52%, and aggravated assaults are up 64% since 2019. The institute also found that two in three Californians say violence and street crime are a problem.

As the late, great Tupac once said of California, “Now let me welcome everybody to the wild wild west.”

Keep Ya Head Up 

It’s easy to poke fun at the fact that a hardened lawbreaker has decided to endorse a Republican lawman. But it makes sense if you look deeper into Mr. Harris’ background.

Not only is he a co-founder of Death Row Records, but he’s also a founding member of the non-profit The Last Mile. The mission of The Last Mile, according to their website, is to prepare:

“…incarcerated individuals for successful reentry through business and technology training.”

One of Mr. Hochman’s positions is that not only should we be enforcing our laws, but doing so with common sense. This message resonates with folks like Mr. Harris who has seen both sides of the law. 

On the day of his release from prison, he said:

“There’s not a dime of difference between Democrats and Republicans when it comes down to results to me at this point. I don’t have a dog in the fight unless the people that’s in power deal with the people that are powerless in a respectful way.”

With Mr. Hochman vowing to be an “independent voice” in Sacramento, “advocating for the citizens, and in particular the victims of crimes,” it’s easy to see how the connection between the two men was made.

A State That’s ‘Untouchable’ Like Eliot Ness

The state of California has so much to offer. Unfortunately, liberal progressives who care little for their constituents have tarnished the Golden State. But perhaps people are starting to wake up to reality, and maybe this endorsement Straight Outta Compton is a sign of things to come.

Something is going to have to give; this last July, homicides in Los Angeles alone hit a 15-year high. And Democrats across the country are starting to realize that the midterms might not go in their favor.

According to a Politico Morning Consult poll, 64% of voters say crime will play a “major role” in how they vote. And a Harvard CAPS/Harris poll had voters stating that crime, along with inflation and immigration, will persuade them to vote Republican. 

With an opposing candidate promising to increase police budgets instead of decreasing them, Mr. Bonta might find himself out of a job. The Public Policy Institute of California postulates that the increase in crime in California could be because police officers have left to the tune of almost 2,000, or a 2.5% decrease. 

So here we are, with one of the founding fathers of gangsta rap endorsing a candidate who wants to increase police budgets. I always said that gangsta rap was the punk rock of hip-hop, and it would appear I am correct.

You better be careful, liberals; you are losing your edge and coolness at an alarming rate. Perhaps we will witness an upset in the California Attorney General’s office.

Only in Cali, as Tupac would say.
