Cardwell Dies At 29

Cardwell’s death was announced by her mother, the reality TV star Mama June Shannon.

“With the breaking heart, we are announcing that @annamarie35 is no longer with us,” Shannon wrote on Instagram. “She passed away in my home last night peacefully at 11:12 PM.”

“She gave one hell of a fight for 10 months she passed away with her family around her like she won’t and we will will be updating y’all with more information as we get it today,” Shannon continued. “We love y’all and continued prayers and thoughts for our family doing this difficult time.”

Cardwell’s death came after Shannon took to Instagram on Friday to ask for prayers for her.

“Y’all we r asking for prayers for our family as we are going through this process we really appreciate y’all for all the thoughts and prayers and we will update y’all whenever we can just know that all of your thoughts and your prayers are very much appreciated during this time,” Shannon wrote, adding the hashtag “#CancerSucks.”

Alana Thompson, Cardwell’s sister, also took to Instagram to mourn her after her passing.

“This is one post I wish I didn’t have to make 💔 Last night we all surrounded Anna with love & let her know it was okay to go,” she wrote. “Unfortunately around 11pm Anna took her last breathe. Anna was in so much pain last night but now as a family we all know she is at peace now. I really don’t know what to say as my heart is completely broken.”

Cardwell’s Cancer Battle

People Magazine reported that after Cardwell began experiencing abdominal pain earlier this year, doctors found cancer in her lung, liver and kidney. The mother of two young daughters began chemotherapy back in March, and she revealed in May that she was in her third round of the treatment. That same month, Shannon admitted that she was “emotionally drained” from dealing with her daughter’s illness.

“I don’t go live [on TikTok] a lot because of Anna. I’m already emotionally drained because of that,” she explained at the time. “I’m not being mean with the emotion… I’m not mentally [or] emotionally prepared to deal with 5,000 people asking me about Anna that day.”

As for dealing with Cardwell’s diagnosis, Shannon said, “You don’t know whether to scream. You don’t know whether to laugh. You don’t know whether to holler. You don’t know who to blame.”

Adrenal Cancer

Cardwell’s official cause of death was adrenal cancer, which is described as a “rare cancer that begins in one or both of the small, triangular glands (adrenal glands) located on top of your kidneys,” according to TODAY.

“When adrenal cancer is found early, there is a chance for cure,” the Mayo Clinic stated. “But if the cancer has spread to areas beyond the adrenal glands, cure becomes less likely. Treatment can be used to delay progression or recurrence.”
