Cardwell’s Cancer Battle

People Magazine reported that after Cardwell began experiencing abdominal pain earlier this year, doctors found cancer in her lung, liver and kidney. The mother of two young daughters began chemotherapy back in March, and she revealed in May that she was in her third round of the treatment. That same month, Shannon admitted that she was “emotionally drained” from dealing with her daughter’s illness.

“I don’t go live [on TikTok] a lot because of Anna. I’m already emotionally drained because of that,” she explained at the time. “I’m not being mean with the emotion… I’m not mentally [or] emotionally prepared to deal with 5,000 people asking me about Anna that day.”

As for dealing with Cardwell’s diagnosis, Shannon said, “You don’t know whether to scream. You don’t know whether to laugh. You don’t know whether to holler. You don’t know who to blame.”

Adrenal Cancer

Cardwell’s official cause of death was adrenal cancer, which is described as a “rare cancer that begins in one or both of the small, triangular glands (adrenal glands) located on top of your kidneys,” according to TODAY.

“When adrenal cancer is found early, there is a chance for cure,” the Mayo Clinic stated. “But if the cancer has spread to areas beyond the adrenal glands, cure becomes less likely. Treatment can be used to delay progression or recurrence.”
