Senator Richard Burr (R-NC), Chairman of the Senate Intelligence Committee, appeared on Face The Nation and stated that under President Obama “terrorism has flourished” throughout the Middle East.
Burr explained that Yemen – a country that the President has repeatedly insisted is a successful model for its counterterrorism strategy – is on the verge of descending into civil war.
He further discussed that the war against ISIS militants in Syria and Iraq is not boding well. ISIS has now spread to “12 different countries around the world,” Burr said.
Here are Burr’s statements:
BURR: Well, Bob, it would have started a long time ago by not removing every U.S. boot from the ground in Iraq and making sure that we could have a stable security force there.
It’s estimated that there are 30,000 either Iraqi and Shia militia that are on the assault for Tikrit. Yet there are only 400 ISIL members holding that entire army off in Tikrit right now. And they required U.S. airstrikes to soften them up some.
I think the reality is that, in our absence, terrorism has flourished throughout the region between Syria and Iraq and has spread now to countries in North Africa and Central Asia.
Burr believes that Obama’s biggest mistake lies in the fact that he removed U.S. boots from the ground in Iraq prior to ensuring there was a stable security force there.
In the summer of 2007, President George W. Bush tried to warn what could happen if troops were pulled out of Iraq against the advice of commanders on the ground.
Via the Washington Post:
To begin withdrawing before our commanders tell us we’re ready would be dangerous for Iraq, for the region and for the United States. It would mean surrendering the future of Iraq to al-Qaeda. It would mean that we’d be risking mass killings on a horrific scale. It would mean we’d allow the terrorists to establish a safe haven in Iraq to replace the one they lost in Afghanistan. It would mean we’d be increasing the probability that American troops would have to return at some later date to confront an enemy that is even more dangerous.”
Burr is correct, terrorism has flourished under President Obama. And what’s worse, people tried to warn him that it would happen this way.
Do you agree or disagree? Has the Nobel Peace Prize-winning President allowed terrorism to actually spread throughout the Middle East?
