Gretchen Whitmer Gets Bad News – She’s Being Stripped Of Emergency Powers

Whitmer

Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer got some bad news on Wednesday when a 76 year-old law was repealed in a move that will strip her of the emergency powers she used during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Whitmer Stripped Of Emergency Powers

Yesterday, the Republican-led Michigan state House voted 60-48 to eliminate the Emergency Powers of the Governor Act of 1945, according to The Washington Examiner. The House followed the state Senate’s lead with this vote, which stemmed from an Unlock Michigan petition calling for the law to be repealed.

Whitmer is powerless to issue a veto here after the state Supreme Court determined the law was unconstitutional. However, the repeal will not go into effect until 91 days after the Legislature adjourns at the end of the year.

Michigan Republicans celebrated the vote on Twitter, writing, “The Michigan House approved the Unlock Michigan citizens’ initiative to repeal the unconstitutional 1945 state law Gov. Gretchen Whitmer used to hold unilateral power over the people of Michigan during the COVID-19 pandemic. Your voices have been heard!”

Republicans Celebrate

Individual Michigan Republicans gleefully celebrated the vote a well.

“When Gov. Whitmer decided to go it alone during the pandemic, her orders left struggling people in their wake,” said state Rep. Ken Borton.

“A solo approach was clearly wrong for our state,” he added. “A governor must work with legislators to discover real solutions that work for everyone, and Unlock Michigan will help protect the people by protecting the legislative process.”

“This action protects the fundamental structure of representation in government and is a win for democracy,” added state Rep. Sue Allor. “The Legislature is a conduit to the people. It is on the ground in their communities listening to their concerns or questions and taking them to Lansing to be heard.”

“This concept was completely uprooted as the governor chose to go it alone and issue wide-ranging executive orders that impacted people’s lives,” she continued. “This measure restores that voice and I’m proud to support its approval today.”

Whitmer became infamous among many during the coronavirus pandemic for using her emergency powers to enact some of the strictest restrictions in the country. Many feel that she should have been stripped of these emergency powers quite some time ago.
