FL Gov. DeSantis’ Answer To Biden Supply Chain Woes: ‘Florida Ports Are Open For Business’

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis (R) sent a clear message to the Biden administration and the nation during a visit to Jacksonville Tuesday morning: “Florida ports are open for business.”

As ports in California, New York, and other areas of the nation continue to pile up with container ships, the Florida governor lent a helping hand to try to ease some of the bottleneck.

Jacksonville Port Authority or as it is commonly known in the Sunshine state, “Jaxport,” is joining DeSantis in the effort to bring crucial supplies to America.

Both Gov. DeSantis and Jaxport CEO Eric Green say that Florida is not experiencing the back up of cargo ships that California is.

Both also say that Florida has the space to accommodate additional shipping, which will ease congestion that has lead to long delays in companies getting products and supplies.

California Failing

During his stop in Jacksonville, Gov. DeSantis talked about Florida’s ability to ease cargo ship back ups and allow products to get to their destinations in a timely manner.

“When you start talking about supply chain, inflation, that’s not something that’s going to impact a small segment. That hits very wide and very hard. Florida is here, we’ve got capacity and we also have incentive packages to make it worth your while to be able to bring your business through our ports.”

California in particular has been a mess, with dozens of container ships sitting idly at anchor rather than unloading their goods.

The New York Post reports that two of California’s ports account for one-third of all import traffic – making it the most significant bottleneck in the country.

To blame are a combination of COVID lockdowns and labor shortages, and increased demand for imports.

Tim Uy of Moody’s Analytics is not optimistic, and says that supply chain problems “will get worse before they get better.” He added, “As the global economic recovery continues to gather steam, what is increasingly apparent is how it will be stymied by supply-chain disruptions that are now showing up at every corner.”

Where Is Mayor Pete?

Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg has been in the hot seat lately for a number of issues involving the ongoing supply chain crisis. As the situation has worsened, Buttigieg was heavily criticized for being on paternity leave and not coming back to work to deal with the problem.

That criticism was compounded when he told CNN that the supply chain was merely strained due to President Joe Biden successfully bringing the country out of a recession. He added, “Demand is up, because income is up, because the president has successfully guided this economy out of the teeth of a terrifying recession.”

Buttigieg also said that Americans could expect that the holidays, “are going to be a lot better this year. Because a year ago millions of Americans were sliding into poverty who now have jobs. And a year ago, a lot of us were gathering with loved ones over a screen.”

Secretary Buttigieg’s comments contradict those of Vice President Kamala Harris, who said during a trip to Singapore in August that, “The stories that we are now hearing about the caution that if you want to have Christmas toys for your children it might be the time to start buying them because the delay may be many, many months.”

During his stop in Jacksonville on Tuesday, Gov. DeSantis proclaimed that “Florida is the way.”
