In Georgia, where former President Donald Trump is facing a legal battle over the 2020 election, it appears those doing the scrutinizing might now have their own ethical problem.

Or, additional ethical questions, as DA Fani Willis had already faced accusations of having an improper relationship with a gang member she was prosecuting.

Now, the District Attorney is alleged to have hired someone she was involved with romantically to prosecute Trump.

Friends With Benefits

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution broke the news on Monday, “District Attorney Fani Willis improperly hired an alleged romantic partner to prosecute Donald Trump and financially benefited from their relationship, according to a court motion filed Monday arguing the indictment was unconstitutional.”

The story continued:

The bombshell public filing alleged that special prosecutor Nathan Wade, a private attorney, paid for lavish vacations he took with Willis using the Fulton County funds his law firm received. County records show that Wade, who has played a prominent role in the election interference case, has been paid nearly $654,000 in legal fees since January 2022. The DA authorizes his compensation.

The motion, filed on behalf of defendant Michael Roman, a former Trump campaign official, seeks to have the charges against Roman dismissed and for Willis, Wade and the entire DA’s office to be disqualified from further prosecution of the case.

That’s a pretty serious accusation, which will require some proof on the part of Michael Roman. But if true, DA Willis will likely be faced with questions about her whole record, not just her record of prosecuting Trump.

An ‘Ongoing, Personal Relationship’

The AJC added, “It is unclear if the explosive issues raised in the filing undermine the validity of the indictment against Trump and the remaining 14 co-defendants or simply muddy the waters by questioning Willis’ professional ethics.”

There is allegedly no clear evidence of the relationship other than “sources close to both the special prosecutor and the district attorney have confirmed they had an ongoing, personal relationship.”

Those sources say that the romantic relationship between Willis and Wade reaches back to a time before Wade was appointed special prosecutor and that they had even taken cruises together.

If True, Did They Really Think They Could Keep Their Relationship a Secret?

Anyway you cut it, this is just not a good look for those seeking punishment for Trump.

It’s about the worst look possible for those going after him, particularly given his emphasis on railing against political corruption.

In fact, this could put a major wrinkle in this case.

Time will tell.
