Rochester Police Chief La’Ron Singletary just resigned along with two deputy police chiefs after days of riots over the death of Daniel Prude.

Mayor Lovely Warren confirmed the resignations to the Rochester City Council on Tuesday, saying that she didn’t know who would lead local law enforcement during the protests that are expected to take place tonight.

Singletary Reveals Why He’s Resigning

Singletary spoke out in a statement to reveal the reasons that he chose to resign.

“Today, after 20 years of dedicated service to the Rochester Police Department and the Rochester Community, I announce my retirement from the Rochester Police Department,” Singletary said. “For the past two decades, I have served this community with honor, pride, and the highest integrity.”

Prude, 41, died in police custody back in March after officers restrained him by placing him in a spit hood. Police had been called by Prude’s family because he was a suffering from a severe mental illness episode, and a medical examiner later concluded that he was under “acute PCP intoxication.”

In his statement, Singletary went on to say that he is choosing to resign because his character is being maligned.

“As a man of integrity, I will not sit idly by while outside entities attempt to destroy my character,” Singletary said. “The events over the past week are an attempt to destroy my character and integrity.”

“The members of the Rochester Police Department and the Greater Rochesters Community know my reputation and know what I stand for,” he continued. “The mischaracterization and the politicization of the actions that I took after being informed of Mr. Prude’s death is not based on facts, and is not what I stand for.”

Mayor Doesn’t Support Police

Police Deputy Chief Joseph Morabito and Deputy Chief Mark Simmons resigned from the force as well after Mayor Warren said that Prude died because of “racism.”

“Institutional and structural racism led to Daniel Prude’s death,” the mayor said. “I won’t deny it, I stand before it, and I call for justice upon it.”

Anti-police sentiments have been at an all-time high in the United States over the past few months, with Democrats vilifying cops every chance they get. Things have gotten so bad that cops are in more danger than ever before thanks to this vilification, so it will come as no surprise if many more of them resign in the coming weeks and months.
