The House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform’s top Democrat, Elijah Cummings, sent a letter to committee chairman Trey Gowdy demanding a hearing with President Donald Trump’s former personal attorney, Michael Cohen.
The letter comes one day after Cohen pleaded guilty to multiple counts of tax fraud and bank violations as well as a campaign finance violation, which Cohen said was related to Trump. Cummings, of Maryland, said he has “no doubt [Gowdy] would convene immediate hearings on these matters if the occupant of the White House were a Democrat.”
Cummings is demanding the hearing in order to “to obtain sworn testimony” by Cohen and quoted Cohen’s lawyer Lanny Davis in the letter, saying Cohen would meet with Congress under oath if asked.

“These are extremely serious crimes that implicate the fundamental underpinnings of our democracy, and they warrant robust and credible oversight by Congress as an independent Constitutional check on the Executive Branch,” Cummings said in the letter.
Gowdy’s office did not immediately respond to The Daily Caller News Foundation’s inquiry regarding Cummings letter.
