Democrat Rep. Al Green Will Defy Pelosi, Force Impeachment Vote

Texas Congressman Al Green (D) says he plans to bring an impeachment vote to the House floor, defying Nancy Pelosi who said she would not support such actions.

Green has introduced articles of impeachment previously, citing reasons as absurd as President Trump’s defense of the National Anthem against NFL players.

Continuing that theme, Green suggests that it is the President’s alleged ‘bigotry’ that is forcing him to put this to a vote.

Green believes Trump “put his bigotry into policy” by seeking a “Muslim ban” that wasn’t actually a Muslim ban, and referring to some African nations “s**thole countries.”

Defying Pelosi

The lawmaker said it is his “responsibility to prevent an unfit president from staying in office” and he doesn’t care if he lacks support from his colleagues.

“This is a sad set of circumstances when we conclude ‘it’s not worth it’ to impeach a bigoted president who is causing harm to a society,” Green said, referencing a specific comment from Pelosi.

“Impeachment is so divisive to the country that unless there’s something so compelling and overwhelming and bipartisan, I don’t think we should go down that path because it divides the country,” the Speaker told Washington Post magazine earlier. “He’s just not worth it.”

Green has been combative with Pelosi in the past, stating publicly that Democrats would pursue the effort should their party win back the House, despite Pelosi’s opposition.

“I don’t think you have to ask me what I’ve heard,” he said during an interview with C-SPAN. “If you have read publications, it is intuitively obvious to perhaps even the most casual observer that she and I are in different places on this.”

Previous Efforts

Green’s previous attempts to impeach President Trump have failed in spectacular fashion.

In October of 2017, he spoke of introducing articles by delivering a fiery anti-Trump speech on the House floor, then, pathetically, watched the resolution expire without so much as a whimper.

He joined five other Democrats in introducing articles in November of that same year, claiming the president had violated federal law and should be charged with high crimes and misdemeanors.

A vote in December failed by a count of 364-58.

This time, Green insists that if he were to only garner his own single vote, he would have done his job by calling out an “unfit President.”

“I will do as my conscience dictates,” he claimed.
