DACA Deal Reached, According to Senator Jeff Flake

We have a deal!

That is, according to Arizona Senator Jeff Flake, who just confirmed to CNBC that a deal has been reached between Democrat and Republican senators on the legal status of young people brought to the United States illegally as minors. This issue is commonly known as the DACA issue, which refers to the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) order made into law by President Barack Obama and later repealed by President Trump.

From the report:

“We’ve got this bipartisan group, we’re at a deal,” the senator said, according to NBC News. “So we’ll be talking to the White House about that and I hope we can move forward with it. It’s the only game in town. There’s no other bill.”

Shortly after Flake’s comments, a spokesman for Sen. Dick Durbin, D-Ill., said talks were still ongoing, according to Reuters. Durbin is a member of the bipartisan group and an early proponent of legislation to shield those immigrants.

Earlier this week, Republicans and Democrats met with President Trump to hash out a deal. In a rare moment of transparency, Trump invited the press in to watch and record the proceedings. Many praised his performance during the deal-making, as the President displayed knowledge about the issue and flexibility and willingness to find a compromise.

Speak of the House Paul Ryan and House Republicans have also put forward their own bill for legalize the status of those affected by DACA, along with providing funds to build a border wall.

We imagine the Senate version, which requires support from Democrats, will look dramatically different from the law-and-order approach of House Republicans. But as of right now, it’s unclear of what this tentative deal is. Democrat Senator Dick Durbin says that talks are still ongoing.
