CNN Analyst on Trey Gowdy: Impeachment is Serious Matter, Unlike Benghazi

CNN senior political analyst John Avlon responded to news of former Congressman Trey Gowdy joining President Trump’s legal team by saying impeachment is a serious matter, unlike the Benghazi terror attacks.

Gowdy served as House Benghazi Committee Chairman between 2014 and 2016.

‘I would love for Trey Gowdy to be consistent on this’

CNN played a clip of Gowdy blasting Democrats for withholding information, but the clip was actually from a hearing that took place before the attacks in Benghazi and involved former President Barack Obama stonewalling on the Fast and Furious scandal.

Avlon, after playing a clip meant to deceive the public on Gowdy’s comments, then had the nerve to discuss consistency.

“I would love for Trey Gowdy to be consistent on this,” he snarked. “I’d love to see philosophical consistency in Congress rather than situational ethics.”

“But you know the problem is he didn’t need to shout it, and be it, we don’t expect it,” Avlon continued. “Because everyone is sort of knee deep in hypocrisy on this stuff.”

“The problem is it is the Constitution at stake. This is not a Benghazi type hearing, this is really serious stuff.”

Four Dead Americans and Lying About a Terrorist Attack Isn’t ‘Serious Stuff’?’

Four dead Americans and an administration consistently lying to the American people about a terrorist attack on the anniversary of 9/11 isn’t ‘serious stuff’?

There are doubtless many people in this country who would disagree with that assessment, starting with the families of those who lost their lives.

Meanwhile, the Trump administration believes Gowdy’s experience in dealing with the Benghazi investigation would be an asset in countering the very unserious impeachment inquiry.

“Gowdy can offer Trump another opinion on where legal theory meets political reality,” Axios reported, while “his Benghazi experience is seen as an asset.”

While the hearings ultimately led to very little accountability for Hillary Clinton, Obama, or Susan Rice, they did issue a scathing report in June of 2016, which definitively revealed that the previous administration deliberately crafted a lie to the American people involving an obscure anti-Muslim YouTube video.

Also, in grilling Hillary on the Clinton Foundation’s history of corruption, Gowdy noted that it’s difficult ascertaining the truth when you’re dealing with a “habitual, serial liar.”

“That’s the interesting thing about credibility and believability, you can’t just keep it in one compartment,” Gowdy said of Clinton. “When you are a habitual, serial liar in this facet of life, it tends to make people not believe you in other facets of life.”

Meanwhile, Clinton and her team made it clear that they were of the same mindset as Avlon, treating the Benghazi hearings as a joke.

Leaked e-mails showed that the Clinton camp was trying to decide what jokes they could use to help downplay her testimony in front of the House select committee investigating Benghazi. They even came up with jokes about Gowdy’s and Trump’s hair.

“On freshening things up, what about: I used to be obsessed with Donald Trump’s hair, that was until I got to spend 11 hours staring at the top of Trey Gowdy’s head,” then-campaign Chairman John Podesta suggested.

What does it say about Democrats and the media that they believe a terrorist attack that killed four Americans and an administration that covered it up is a joke, but a phone call from Trump to another world leader is very serious?
