Chris Wallace Confronts Lindsey Graham For Opposing Manchin’s Voting Rights Proposal

The Fox News host Chris Wallace confronted Senator Lindsey Graham this week for opposing the voting Senator Joe Manchin’s (D-WV) compromise on the voting rights bill that Democrats are trying to push through Congress.

Wallace Questions Graham

After going through some of the aspects of Manchin’s proposal, Wallace asked, “Can you go along with the Manchin stripped-down version, and if not, why not?”

“I don’t like the idea of taking the power to redistrict away from state legislators,” Graham replied. “As much as I like Joe Manchin, the answer would be no.”

Wallace fired back by talking about some of the differences Manchin made in his proposal before asking how the moderate Democrat could potentially react to opposition from Republicans. He said:

“If Republicans vote, as it appears you’re going to, to kill the Manchin version of voting rights — you’ve already, Republicans voted to kill the bipartisan January 6th commission looking into the insurrection at the Capitol — do you run the risk that Manchin and a couple of other moderate senators will eventually say, ‘Look, bipartisanship isn’t working, and you know what? We’re not going to kill the filibuster, but we’re going to reduce the number of votes you need to stop a debate from 60 to 55.'”

“I hope not,” Graham replied. “Because I was in Joe Manchin’s shoes.”

Graham Doubles Down

In this same interview, Graham also slammed Democrats’ version of the bill, calling it “the biggest power grab in the history of the country.”

“In my view, S.R. 1 is the biggest power grab in the history of the country,” he said. “It mandates ballot harvesting, no voter ID. It does away with the states being able to redistrict when you have population shifts. It’s just a bad idea, and it’s a problem that most Republicans are not going to sign — they’re trying to fix a problem most Republicans have a different view of.”

This comes a week after Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) said that Republicans would oppose Manchin’s compromise proposal,” according to The Hill

“I would make this observation about the revised version. … All Republicans, I think, will oppose that as well if that were to be what surfaced on the floor,” McConnell said.
