Biden Claims January 6 Capitol Riot Was ‘Worst Attack On Our Democracy Since The Civil War’

Biden worst attack since civil war

During his address to Congress on Wednesday night, President Joe Biden said that the January 6 riot at the Capitol building was “the worst attack on our democracy since the Civil War.”

That’s quite a statement, but others on social media begged to differ.

Biden: ‘The Worst Attack On Our Democracy Since The Civil War’

In his speech, Biden said, “Throughout our history, presidents have come into this chamber to speak to Congress, to the nation, and to the world, to declare war, to celebrate peace, to announce new plans and possibilities.”

“Tonight, I come to talk about crisis and opportunity,” the president said. “By rebuilding a nation, revitalizing our democracy, and winning the future for America, I stand here tonight one day shy of the 100th day in my administration.”

“100 days since I took the oath of office and lifted my hand off our family bible and inherited a nation, we all did, that was in crisis,” he continued. “The worst pandemic in a century. The worst economic crisis since the Great Depression.”

Then Biden said, “The worst attack on our democracy since the civil war.”

The internet wasn’t having it. Especially conservative commentators.

Iowa law school professor Andy Grewal noted that since the Civil War four presidents have been assassinated.

Conservatives Have Fun With Biden’s Claim

Jason Miller, a former senior advisor to former President Trump, wondered if Biden had forgot about 9/11 or Pearl Harbor.

The New York Post’s Jon Levine noted, “Left wing terrorists literally detonated a bomb in the US capitol in 1983 and one of them was later granted clemency by Bill Clinton.”

As Smithsonian Magazine relates – “A far-left, female-led domestic terrorism group bombed the U.S. Capitol.” That event was November 7, 1983.

The satire site Babylon Bee’s Joel Berry posted a picture of the Capitol building after it was bombed in 1983.

“Leaving aside 9/11, here is a picture of the Capitol building after it was bombed by left-wing terrorists in 1983,” Berry shared on Twitter.

“They also killed police,” he added. “One of the terrorists was pardoned by Bill Clinton,” Berry said, echoing Levine.

That same group, Smithsonian notes: “Over the course of a 20-month span in 1983 and 1984, M19 also bombed an FBI office, the Israel Aircraft Industries building, and the South African consulate in New York, D.C.’s Fort McNair and Navy Yard (which they hit twice.)”

Biden had his share of defenders.

NBC News presidential historian Michael Beschloss backed Biden’s claim completely:
