President Biden is again living by the mantra ‘if you repeat a lie often enough people will believe it,’ reiterating a consistently debunked claim that the Second Amendment never allowed for cannon ownership.
Biden made his remarks during an announcement on a new rule cracking down on “ghost guns.”
“By the way — it’s going to sound bizarre — I support the Second Amendment,” said the President. “You have a right.”
“But from the very beginning, the Second Amendment didn’t say you can own any gun you want, big as you want,” he added. “You couldn’t buy a cannon when, in fact, the Second Amendment passed.”
Legal analyst Jonathan Turley took Biden to task over the comments.

Biden Repeats Lie About Second Amendment And Cannons
Constitutional scholar and legal analyst Jonathan Turley hammered President Biden for repeating the claim that the Second Amendment prohibited cannon ownership.
“The suggestion that the Second Amendment was viewed as limited types of gun ownership, even cannons, is false,” he tweeted.

Turley noted that Biden’s description of his comment as being “bizarre” is accurate in a way “because it is legally and historically untrue.”
“There was no federal regulation or law barring the types of guns or weapons that could be possessed or owned when the Second Amendment was ratified,” Turley said.
“What is weird is that he keeps raising a point that undermines his position because this was not the view in the early Republic.”
…The President said “this is going to sound bizarre but I support the Second Amendment” and noted that you could not buy a cannon in the early Republic. It does sound bizarre because it is legally and historically untrue.

Debunked By Fact-Checkers
What’s truly bizarre is that Biden repeated the cannon claim, obsessively focusing on a relic of a weapon to make a point about modern-day gun issues.
He said something similar in a gun control speech last June.
“The Second Amendment, from the day it was passed, limited the type of people who could own a gun and what type of weapon you could own,” continued the President. “You couldn’t buy a cannon.”
The Washington Post at the time debunked the claim, noting he had made similar comments during his 2020 campaign. Though, they said Biden was ‘tripped up’ by a “parenthetical aside.”

Biden Goes On A Tangent
“Biden has already been fact-checked on this claim — and it’s been deemed false,” the Washington Post wrote, handing him four Pinocchios.
“We have no idea where he conjured up this notion about a ban on cannon ownership in the early days of the Republic, but he needs to stop making this claim.”
He clearly hasn’t taken their advice.
Biden, during his speech, also went off on a bizarre tangent, telling a story about a hunter who must have been a bad shot because it’s not like the deer are wearing Kevlar vests.

As a cannon scholar, you’d think President Biden would recognize the fact that the Second Amendment, written with the American revolution freshly in mind, wasn’t addressing the right to bear arms for deer hunters.
