Bernie Sanders Thinks U.S. Should ‘Follow New Zealand’s Lead’ in Mass Gun Confiscation

On Thursday, self-described socialist Senator Bernie Sanders said that New Zealand’s decision to ban semi-automatic weapons in the wake of the Christchurch mosque shooting tragedy is something the United States should replicate.

The ban went into effect Thursday via executive order and is expected to become law, passing through Parliament soon. Once becoming law, after a certain period of time, New Zealanders will be fined or jailed for up to three years if found in possession of any weapons banned under the new legislation.

“On 15 March, our history changed forever. Now, our laws will, too,” New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said Thursday. “We are announcing action today on behalf of all New Zealanders to strengthen our gun laws and make our country a safer place.”

Socialists Love Gun-Grabbing

Bernie Sanders couldn’t be happier.

“This is what real action to stop gun violence looks like,” the 2020 Democratic presidential candidate tweeted. “We must follow New Zealand’s lead, take on the NRA and ban the sale and distribution of assault weapons in the United States.”

Sanders wasn’t the only socialist excited about New Zealand’s gun grab.

“Sandy Hook happened 6 years ago and we can’t even get the Senate to hold a vote on universal background checks w/ #HR8,” tweeted Democrat Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. “Christchurch happened, and within days New Zealand acted to get weapons of war out of the consumer market.”

“This is what leadership looks like,” she wrote pointing to a story about New Zealand’s new gun directive.

Though he doesn’t call himself a socialist, Democrat Senator Chris Murphy of Connecticut has led gun-control efforts since the Sandy Hook tragedy and also praised New Zealand’s new policy.

“See. It’s not that hard,” the senator tweeted.

Could This Happen in the U.S.?

Unlike New Zealand, the United States has the right to private gun ownership enshrined in our Constitution via the Second Amendment to the Bill of Rights.

But don’t think a mere triviality like the U.S. Constitution would get in the way of an all-powerful President Bernie Sanders.

Though most conservatives support President Trump’s national emergency declaration for the border wall, some have argued that even though we have a genuine border crisis, handling it with an executive order could set a dangerous precedent for future Democrat presidents.

Is it hard to imagine a President Sanders – or any Democrat president – declaring a “national emergency” in the wake of another Parkland or Sandy Hook-like shooting tragedy and demanding mass gun confiscations?

No, it’s not. Sanders, Ocasio-Cortez and many other Democrats are saying openly right now they would like to replicate New Zealand’s policy in the U.S. Public support for increased gun control always skyrockets after a national mass shooting tragedy.

Many of us laugh at Bernie Sanders today but don’t be surprised if he’s leading the charge from the White House to take our guns in the future.
