It’s the end of an era. On Thursday, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi announced that she will not seek another leadership position in the Democrat Party when her Speakership ends in January.

While she will no longer be the leader of her party, she will continue to serve as a member of Congress representing California’s 12th Congressional District.

It has been quite a ride for Pelosi. She has served two four-year stints as Speaker of the House, and has been a thorn in the side of Republicans.

Nancy Pelosi has presided over some of the most expensive pieces for legislation ever conceived, costing American taxpayers hundreds of billions of dollars. She has also given Republicans plenty of comedy fodder over the years. Sometimes you have to laugh to keep from crying.

It’s time to take a look back at some of Nancy Pelosi’s greatest hits – to your wallet that is, if you happen to be a taxpayer.

Why We Had To Pass Obamacare

Nancy Pelosi, in her first stint as speaker, was instrumental in ramming through the Affordable Care Act, a.k.a., Obamacare. Pelosi’s wheeling and dealing began in November of 2009, and culminated with enough votes for it to pass the House in March of 2010.

The Obamacare episode produced one of her most famous quotes. Actually, it’s probably one of the most famous American political quotes at this point.

Prior to the monstrosity that was Obamacare being passed, in her zeal to push all 906 pages down the throats of Americans, Pelosi stated, “We have to pass the bill so that you can find out what is in it.”

At the time, Rep. Bill Posey (R-FL) responded to Pelosi’s lack of knowledge of how the process might work, saying, “I think America would rather know what’s in the bill before it’s passed and becomes law.”

During the financial crisis in 2008, Pelosi also made sure to get the votes for a $700 billion bail out of Wall Street financial institutions. At the time Pelosi characterized the bill not as a bail out, but a “bail in.” Right.

One of the highlights of the bill, limiting so-called “golden parachutes” for executives. While ironically, making money on Wall Street herself, Pelosi announced that “the party is over.”

Nancy’s More Recent Escapades

Among some of Nancy Pelosi’s more recent stand-out events, the August passage of what was billed as the “Inflation Reduction Act,” that many economists said would do anything but reduce inflation.

Nancy Pelosi and Joe Biden celebrated being able to fund all of their favorite things, like taxing corporations, who only pass their costs on to consumers, hiring 87,000 IRS agents, and something called “energy focused climate programs.”

Pelosi said of the legislation, which mysteriously became the “climate, tax, and healthcare” bill, that it was “life-changing legislation.”

But perhaps nothing was a better illustration of Nancy Pelosi herself, and how she operates, than what came at the end of President Donald Trump’s 2020 State of the Union speech.

As the audience stood up to applaud, Pelosi, in a heightened state of Trump derangement syndrome, began to tear up her copy of the President’s speech, very methodically, before the television cameras. When asked about it, she stated that it was, “the courteous thing to do considering the alternative.” There was no explanation as to what the “alternative” might be.

House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (D-MD) and Democratic Whip Jim Clyburn (D-SC) also announced on Thursday they would not seek election to leadership roles in the new Congress.
