Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) urged illegal immigrants to fill out the 2020 census on Thursday night during an interview with late night television host Seth Myers.
While appearing on Myers’ NBC show, Ocasio-Cortez said that “every single person, no matter your documentation status” should participate in filling out the once-in-a-decade record of those living in the United States.
“We’re all going to get mailed a prompt to fill out the census in the next two weeks or so,” the radical Democrat said. “Every single person, no matter your documentation status, no matter your housing status, income, etc., is to be counted.”
This comes months after Ocasio-Cortez slammed the idea of a citizenship question on the census, saying that “unspeakable horrors have been executed in the United States in the name of citizenship.”
The census is set to come out this coming Thursday, and the Washington Examiner reports that it “will be used to determine how government funds should be used to build a wide range of infrastructures such as schools, hospitals, homes, and supermarkets.” One controversial aspect of the census is that it is used to determine distribution of congressional seats, and ten states will likely lose or gain representatives based on this year’s census.
President Donald Trump was hit with backlash in 2018 when his administration announced plans to reintroduce a citizenship question on the census for the first time since 1950. Leftists said that this move was xenophobic and would suppress a real count of the population, but others said that this question would put an end to voter discrimination. Federal Judge Jesse Furman ended up ruling that a citizenship question would not be on the census, saying that it would be “arbitrary and capricious.”
The Trump administration fought to have a citizenship question on the census until June of 2019, when the Supreme Court ruled 5-4 that it would not be included.
