Al Franken Accuses Trump Of Promoting ‘Disinformation’ That Is ‘Very, Very Dangerous’ And ‘Practically Treasonous’

Former Minnesota Senator Al Franken said disinformation in America is creating "a very dangerous situation," accusing supporters of Donald Trump of believing his "practically treasonous" lies.

Former Minnesota Senator Al Franken said disinformation in America is creating “a very dangerous situation,” accusing supporters of Donald Trump of believing the former President’s “practically treasonous” lies.

Franken, making a rare appearance on CNN, was prompted about questions involving a current rift in the GOP that could result in anti-Trump Rep. Liz Cheney’s ouster from leadership.

“When you’re looking at this, obviously we see the state of the party, but what does it say to you about the state of the union, about the state of American democracy?” CNN’s Brianna Keilar wondered.

Franken indicated the Republican Party is being guided by “disinformation.”

“We have in this country an unprecedented situation where we have two systems of information, and one of them is disinformation,” he replied.

Al Franken On Trump’s ‘Disinformation’

Al Franken, who successfully challenged his own election results in the 2008 Senate race against Republican Norm Coleman, then blasted the party for alleged fealty to Trump by supporting his “disinformation” campaign regarding the 2020 election.

“The Republicans in Congress seem to be terrified of the Trump people and believe that the only way they get elected is by getting that 84%, 85% of the people that support Trump,” Franken said.

“It doesn’t matter what the trust is,” he continued. “It doesn’t matter that this is anti-democratic and practically treasonous, and it’s a very, very dangerous situation we’re in, in this country.”

House Republicans have scheduled a vote Wednesday to remove Cheney from her leadership role as the number three Republican in the chamber.

They cite her inability to unify messaging ahead of the 2022 midterms and instead focusing on Trump and his supporters, whom she referred to in a Washington Post op-ed as his “cult of personality.”

Hillary Clinton Wants ‘Disinformation’ From Trump Supporters Shut Down

Franken’s comments echo those of former First Lady Hillary Clinton who suggested that social media needs a “global reckoning” with disinformation, and urged the media to “rid themselves of both-sideism.”

In other words, supporters of the former President need their opinions and views shut down.

“I do think that there has to be not just an American reckoning but a global reckoning with the disinformation, with the monopolistic power and control, with the lack of accountability that the platforms currently enjoy,” Clinton told The Guardian.

Of the mainstream press, she advised, “They’ve got to rid themselves of both-sidesism.”

Franken also accused Republicans of always trying to find ways to cut unemployment benefits and said he actually doesn’t believe most GOP members in Congress think the 2020 presidential election was stolen from Trump.
