The United States Air Force is now authorizing the use of gender pronouns in signature blocks for department communications.
A memo sent out on December 9th by Chief Information Officer Lauren Barrett Knausenberger announces the move.
“This guidance provides approval for the use of pronouns in electronic signature blocks and expands on written communication by providing official templates posted on e-publishing website available for download,” a letter accompanying the memo states.
“The use of pronouns (he/him, she/her, or they/them) in an email signature block is authorized but not required,” the document reads.

Air Force Green Lights Pronouns
The Air Force authorizing pronouns comes less than two months after the Biden State Department celebrated issuing the first US passport with an “X” gender marker.
“As the Secretary announced in June, the Department is moving towards adding an X gender marker for non-binary, intersex, and gender non-conforming persons applying for a U.S. passport or CRBA,” department spokesman Ned Price back in October.
As such, he said, “The Department has issued the first U.S. passport with an X gender marker.”
A U.S. Navy veteran who identifies as intersex made history after becoming the nation’s first person to receive a gender “X” passport.

A week earlier, the State Department marked ‘International Pronouns Day’ with a tweet offering guidance on why people share their pronouns on social media.
The informational post explained that “sharing pronouns (is) a way of getting to know someone” and “avoids accidentally assuming an incorrect gender.”
They discuss the basic level pronoun assignments – ‘he/him/his,’ ‘she/her/hers’ – but also dabble into those who choose non-traditional pronouns such as ‘they/them/theirs.’
The State Department even makes mention of “pioneering” individuals who use “gender-neutral pronouns such as ze/zir/zirs.”

The Air Force Academy in 2017 went viral when Lt. Gen. Jay Silveria was so moved by a racial incident – racial slurs scrawled on message boards directed at black enrollees – that he lectured cadets on their treatment of each other.
“If you can’t treat someone with dignity and respect,” Silveria said, “then get out.”
Silveria was commended by the current President.
But the incident ended up being a hoax, the messages actually left by the person who claimed to have been the target.

Earlier this month, the Air Force discharged 27 active-duty members who refused to get vaccinated against Covid-19.
