Why Are 10,000 Haitians Trying To Cross The Southern Border?

The onslaught of illegal immigrants at the U.S. southern border shows no signs of letting up. Since last week, Americans have been subjected to shocking images of tens of thousands of Haitian immigrants piling up at the border.

What started out as a few thousand quickly grew to roughly 14,000 by late last week. Thousands have been encamped under the Del Rio International bridge after they illegally crossed the border with seemingly no resistance.

The encampment has grown into a squalid humanitarian crisis, and has forced the Biden administration to close at least one entry point and deploy more Border Patrol agents to the area.

How Did They Get Here?

Many Americans are wondering how tens of thousands of Haitians were able to cross the southern border in the first place.

After all, Haiti is an island nation 2,000 miles from Del Rio, Texas.

According to the New York Post, “many” of the Haitians fled after the 2010 earthquake in that country – migrating to South America first, and now to America.

The crisis has grown to the point that the Biden administration is flying plane loads of Haitians back to their capital, Port Au Prince.

Former Acting Immigration and Customs Enforcement Director Ron Vitiello ripped into the Biden administration over the crisis.

During an appearance on the Fox News Channel on Monday he stated, “The images that you’re seeing should disturb all of America- whether you’re on the right, the middle or the left. We deserve better from our leadership.”

Vitiello continued, “This kind of chaos is not good for anybody. It’s not good for our cities and towns and homeland and it’s not good for the border community. Think about the agents who have to deal with that crush of humanity every day and then go back home to their own families.”

Vitiello described exactly what kind of message the Biden administration sent, and continues to send to the rest of the world with its open border policies: “They sent a signal across the globe including to Haiti that they weren’t going to deport people who came into the country illegally. This is the world’s only superpower and the most prosperous nation on the planet and we are just letting people walk into the country.”

GOP Governors Fed Up

On Monday, a group of 26 Republican Governors issued an open letter to President Joe Biden requesting a meeting to discuss the border crisis. The group was led by Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey and Texas Gov. Greg Abbott.

A portion of the letter read,

“The months-long surge in illegal crossings has instigated an international humanitarian crisis, spurred a spike in international criminal activity, and opened the floodgates to human traffickers and drug smugglers endangering public health and safety in our states.”

The governors wrote, “We must end the current crisis and return to border operations that respect the laws of our land and the lives of all people, including those in our states looking to the federal government to enforce and protect our nation’s borders.”

Among the other Governors signing the letter to the President, Govs. Kay Ivey of Alabama, Asa Hutchinson of Arkansas, Brian Kemp of Georgia, Larry Hogan of Maryland, and Kristi Noem of South Dakota.

President Joe Biden spent part of his weekend in Delaware cycling.

Vice President and Border Czar Kamala Harris spent part of her weekend at her Alma Mater officiating the coin toss for a football game.
