On Wednesday, White House press secretary Jen Psaki was asked about recent news that supply chain problems are going to impact Christmas deliveries this year.
The problems with the supply chain have been top headlines in recent weeks, with thousands of container ships sitting idly at port, unable to be unloaded.
Psaki made some eye-brow raising, some might say dismissive, comments about it during the daily White House briefing.
Psaki said that the while the Biden administration would take any steps necessary to fix any potential delivery problems during the holidays, there were no guarantees.
A reporter asked her, “Based on everything being announced today can this administration guarantee the holiday packages will arrive on time?”
Psaki replied, “We are not the Postal Service, UPS or FedEx. We cannot guarantee.”
“What we do is use every lever at the federal government’s disposal to reduce delays, to ensure that we are addressing bottlenecks in the system including ports and the need for them to be open longer hours so that goods can arrive,” Psaki said.
She added, “And we can continue to press not only workers and unions but also companies to take as many steps as they can to reduce these delays.”
The United States Postal Service has said that if customers wants their packages to arrive in time for Christmas, all first-class packages should be shipped by Dec. 17, and priority mail by Dec. 18.
CBS News reported on Tuesday, “The U.S. Postal Service, FedEx and UPS have released recommended ship-by dates for gifts to be delivered in time for the December 25 holiday, which lands on a Saturday this year.”
“With supply chain snags slowing deliveries to both retail stores and home doorsteps — and the USPS itself slowing mail delivery as part of a broad cost-cutting plan — retailers were already recommending consumers shop (and ship) early.” CBS News noted.
While it may not seem like the biggest deal in the world, most Americans – living in the world’s superpower – expect basic services to work. They expect their government to provide the conditions necessary that allow, for example, thousands of idle container ships to be unloaded and for goods to move freely.
Psaki’s flippant response is not a good look for the White House.
