West Virginia Governor Signs Law Mandating Doctors to Provide Care to Babies Born Alive After Abortion

Jim Justice, the Governor of West Virginia, signed into law on Monday a bill that mandates doctors to provide medical care to babies who are born alive after an abortion attempt.

“An Absolute No-Brainer”

HB 4007, known as the Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act, rules that if any child who is born after an abortion has “a beating heart, pulsation of the umbilical cord, or definite movement of voluntary muscles,” then that child is alive. The physicians then must “exercise the same degree of reasonable medical judgment to preserve the life and health of the child as a physician would render to any other child born alive at the same gestational age; and to ensure that the child born alive is immediately transported and admitted to a hospital.”

Governor Justice said in a statement that the bill was “an absolute no-brainer” in his eyes.

“I’ve said for a long time, even back before I took office as Governor, that I would support measures like this because every human life – born or unborn is precious and truly a gift from God,” the Governor said. “If I had my way, I would stand up here and say I stand for life in all cases, all the time. It’s unbelievable that we even have to go through this process for something that seems like it’s just common sense.”

He added that West Virginia should be “really proud” for “defending the lives of our most vulnerable.”

“To God above, that baby is worth it,” the Governor added. “Today, we’re going to put a stake in the sand and say – for us, at least – we stand for life and we stand for the right stuff.”

One Step Closer to Saving Children from Abortion

The news was plauded by Wanda Franz, the President of West Virginians for Life.

“This new law puts teeth in our state legal system to make it possible to report and prosecute these cases. The people of West Virginia want these infants to be protected by West Virginia law,” Franz told Life News.

Of course, pro-abortion activists were out in force against the law from the beginning. Dr. Jen Villavicencio of the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecologists, who advocates abortion on demand, said in January she was “worried about how it’s going to be interpreted and what’s going to happen.”

Well, she should be worried! This is another step West Virginia is taking to stop sacrificing the lives of the unborn on the leftist altar of abortion. It won’t be long before people like Miss Villavicencio are out of a job.
