Signs have been showing up at this grocery store and making some people very upset… especially welfare EBT card users.
Welfare moochers and Obama voters are furious about what the sign says, as they believe it shames poor people. But I think it’s great!

The sign is being hung throughout Wawa grocery stores in Philadelphia, noting their stores are no longer going to be accepting food stamps.
The sign (below) reads, “We are no longer accepting EBT. Please use cash or credit. If you do not have cash or credit then maybe it’s time to get a job.”
The blunt sign was posted on Facebook by Jay McGuire and is already going viral! More than 5,000 people have liked it this week… clearly, people are sharing it because they are tired of welfare queens who refuse to work and live off hardworking taxpayers.

Sorry, Not a kind sign. Does WaWa know WHY someone is using at EBT card? A total judgment and that’s with WaWa being paid 100% for items purchased. I agree that there is a great deal of abuse within our social service system; however, over the last years, there are people on assistance who never dreamed they would be. And many truly want to work but have not been able to find jobs. At least jobs that can provide them with food and shelter. A single adult gets $140.00/month. I believe a mom and child may receive around $300.00. Could you pay for rent, food and utilities and all the rest we need to survive on those amounts? So an additional amount for food (which also isn’t very much) really helps. Do you know they cannot purchase essentials like toilet paper, diapers, shampoo, deodorant, toothpaste, etc. with their food stamps? Public Assistance was created for emergency purposes, not a way of life. I realize it has become a way of life for some but, again, there are many that have been forced to accept assistance out of necessity. Also, do you realize how degrading and embarrassing it is to ask for food or people know that you are on assistance? I thank the Lord I was never in that position, but I have worked in food pantries as well as social services. There is so much more to the story. I believe WaWa could have come up with a better idea. Maybe a community food distribution once a month? Just an idea.

A lot of people receiving SNAP benefits also have jobs. You know the type of job – the poor paying ones that the corporations haven’t been able to send to places like China and Mexico… Those people don’t get food stamps for themselves, they are getting them for their children. Believe it or not minimum wage is not enough to support a family.
I’m sure there is a fringe on the far-right who we say that poor people shouldn’t be allowed to have children or maybe their children should be taken by the state but that isn’t realistic.
Anyhow, there has to be jobs available before people can find them. If you want to get rid SNAP vote Trump who will brings jobs back here.
I would LOVE to get a job, only because Iam 73 years old, no one around where I live will hire me. Too many younger people with families still trying to find jobs so they hire the younger folks. I am eligible for food stamps. but do not get them because I cannot drive for medical reasons and this town has no public transportation to get to the food stamp office.
I agree in this way only, I would hope that people who are on food assistance for whatever reason or circumstance, would find a better, cheaper, more well stocked store to spend their benefits at.
As i understand the various uses for EBT cards in the various states, some are loaded with cash benefits, maybe even child support. I wonder if the store will still accept WIC vouchers for Milk or eggs?

The “welfare queen” idea is ridiculous. It never really existed. First of all, welfare fraud types – your “welfare queens” – make up about 4% of SNAP/EBT recipients. Just 4%.
In contrast, about 20% is made up of the elderly & disabled (including disabled vets; I thought we were supposed to support the troops? How un-patriotic of you). Over half are single parents. Between 70% (single recipients) and 90% (recipients with children) have jobs in addition to food stamps, but doesn’t get paid enough to cover their basic expenses.
Oh, and the average food stamp payout is $120 a month. Most of us spend more than that on groceries in a WEEK.
If you’re concerned about junk food & stuff being bought with food stamps, then try to get something done about the price of food. When eating junk food can feed you on $5 for a whole day, but the ingredients for a single salad cost $10 or more, it’s not realistic to complain when people who have less than $10 a day for food (only $3/day, on average) decide to spend it on what they can afford.

the bad thing is people seem to think this is shaming the poor, however i think just the opposite, i do not have a problem helping others as long as they are willing to help themselves. the problem here is with the requirement to pass a drug screen in order to be able to work for your money, the same should go to welfare receipients as well, they should be drug tested before receiving benefits. i know that from time to time people need assistance and i am all for that, but for those that refuse to get a job and just live off others is just morally wrong.there are way too many stories out there of people that want to live off others and refusing to help themselves, and frankly i am sick of it.
how fantastic it is, that we as a society feel that publicly shaming people that are down on their luck, is something to be celebrated. Less than 10% of EBT transactions are fraud or abuse, but by all means feel free to shame the poor!

What on earth is a WaWa?
I have to ask, how many TV’s do you have? Do you have cable, internet? Do you use credit cards and if so pay them off each month or carry a balance? all of these things and others, that we feel are necessities, are not yet cut into those things that are, like food and shelter. You may truly be where you describe yourself and I am sure most people can see and understand, but as a recipient, you owe it to your benefactors to be an absolute good steward of their money.
ya know I get the fact that everyone is upset over the people who sit on welfare and refuse to work or go out and have 10 kids and live off food stamps and things .. it does me too
but what about those of us who work our butts off and still are forced to ask for help from our states just to make it through the month.
my husband and I both work full time and pay our bills every month and we pay our taxes every year. yet due o the cost of living versus the wages we receive we r sill forced to get help with food stamps and medical. The insurance companies have the premiums out of sight for the average American and the prices of food housing exc has gone out of sight
I read a comment on here where someone said that instead of saying “no bridge card accepted at all … get a job ” they should limit purchases to no junk pop exc … that I agree with because taking bridge card away completely does hinder those of us who have to use it (the ones with jobs) before you go judging people just by the fact they use a bridge card perhaps people should find out the situation.

my family has just as much right to eat as yours , I am a hard working red blooded American just like you. we probley grew up different, or had different oppertunities in life , and that’s ok but stop judging bridge card holders all the same – not all of us want or even like having to collect food stamps but just like you we do what needs to be done to provide for our families just like you

Yea, what about the disabled people that have worn out their bodies through hard work and no longer can provide for themselves. You know the ones so poor they can’t afford the gas to go to the next available grocery store. Your going to sacrifice them so you can punish the welfare queens. Pat yourselves on the back… give yourselves a high five… to punish the bad, you have hurt the people that need help the most.
Although I agree withe the spirt of the signs; maybe it would be better if the EBT cards expired after a few months.
We’ve all been through tough times, and not to honor the cards could make it hard for people; if this catches on.
Good for them but punishes those who need basic necessities like bread, milk, eggs, meat products, vegetables, etc. but no snacks, soft drinks, candy, ice cream, frozen entrees, cigarettes, etc. to feed their families would be more acceptable and fair.
Why do we always hear about the people buying tons of groceries using food stamps and then driving away in cars that cost more than some peoples houses? If you really see this, why are you not reporting it. All government agencies have a fraud waste and abuse hotline. Instead of standing idly by and getting disgruntled…Act, call the proper agency. Yes I know that you may not know who they are, but write down the license plate. The government can access the records and cross check their applications. If they lied about their assets. Prosecute them. Do not make the exception to the rule “the rule”. There are plenty of people who work (sometimes more than one job) who legitimately need assistance. Food banks don’t carry everything people need to get by and there are more honest people on public assistance than “free loaders” Yes every system has it’s flaws and things do slip through the cracks. Do I believe that those on public assistance need to be held accountable, absolutely. If you have a problem, offer a solution. My solution would be If you are receiving welfare then you are receiving a paycheck from the government. Since you are receiving pay you should be required to work. If you don’t show up you get docked. If you are late a write up. Don’t show up for 3 days voluntary resignation and dropped from the payroll. And random drug tests. Just because it turned into a free lunch program does not mean it needs to stay that way. Quarterly or semi annual reviews to verify needed continuation and to verify that you have actively sought other work. Food stamps are a different realm. single mother of 4 working at mc hamburgers in Los Angeles, Chicago, New York 40 hrs a week 10.00 an hour (yes I know that is high. 1600.00 a month. average rent 1600 a month. (no not everyone wants to live with 5 families just to pay rent) She takes another job working 20 hours a week earning 10.00 and hour that’s 800.00 (all pre tax) so she makes 2400.00 a month. leaves her 800 to pay lights, gas, water, pay for gas for car or bus fare. It doesn’t go very far so is it wrong to provide some help to feed her family? You can argue well she should have got an education (meaning bachelor or master degree) News flash there are people working at Starlucks, Mc hamburger, convenience stores and construction who have masters and bachelors degrees. So she is just as qualified as the college learned to flip burgers and pour shakes. Do not condemn her for the abusers. Blame the government and your senators, congressmen and their cronies for allowing it to happen. Hold the policy makers accountable for doing what we pay them to be, which is stewards of our heard earned money. (taxes) You continue to vote the same do nothing people into office and then you complain. “Be accountable, and hold them accountable”

I think there is many that do abuse the welfare system but to assume all do is just wrong.I think many should think and realize some day something might happen to them and will need it also and won’t think then it is just for moochers and free loaders.If people are able to work then by all means they should work,but that is not always the case.

I think this is great and I would hope more store chains would follow suit. It is way past the time to have those on welfare & food stamps learn to work before getting the free benefits.

MY FOOD STAMPS AMOUNTS TO $56.00 PR. MONTH AND THAT DOES NOT COVER PAPER GOODS ( BATH TISSUE PAPER TOWELS) TOILETRIES (SOAP, CLEANING THINGS FOR FLOORS TOILETS ETC.) (KLEENEX ETC) CLOTHING AND SO ON .ALSO IT DOESN’T COVER COOKED ITEMS (PREPARED FOODS LIKE BBQ CHICKEN , PIZZA ETC ) AND IF SOMETHING IN THE HOUSE BREAKS I EITHER FIX IT MYSELF OR GO WITH OUT THAT ITEM.

Maybe most of the people who agreed with this sign really aren’t a thoughtless and cruel in real life but without thinking you hurt. I am disabled, my SS check is less than $800 per month so I need the food stamp to live. Getting a job is not possible, but not trading and at WaWa is true. I can agree with the business choice with any hard feeling, the statement that follows shows no thought.

We can all thank LBJ for the welfare mess created in America. Too lazy to work, so those ingrates lay up on their fat butts, won’t get a job, many trade their food stamp cards for drugs, etc. This is how kids have grown up since the 60’s. It’s time all stores denied food stamps. Refuse to work, then get off your lazy behind and get a job even if you have to sweep floors, pick up trash on the street.

I do not believe this for a second. There are many legitimate people who need and use EBT. I know there are also dead beats who use them, but you cannot deny those who truly are in need. I don’t believe any reputable Corp or Individually owned food store would ever post a sign such as this.
I really don’t wanna have to be “that guy” to say it, but there is absolutely no way that this is true. I’ve grown up with Wawa, and I know for a fact that they would not allow this sign to be posted, so it must have either been done by a disgruntled employee and would’ve obviously been quickly removed, or it’s a fake. Wawa has a very firm belief and business model (somewhat similar to the family beliefs of Chick-Fil-A) and they would not risk bad publicity and damage to their reputation by using that sign. If they were to stop accepting EBT, which can happen, they would have corporate-printed and approved signs with their logo that would be distributed to every store for placement, and it would probably be on their website. I’m really surprised anyone who lives in the northeast with Wawa hasn’t said that this is not Wawa behavior…

Very good. I like this sign. God said if you don’t work, you don’t eat. God also ask us to use wisdom…as the truly poor are with us and we are to help them, but this is to be done with common sense, not foolishness.
Wawa(Wild Goose) are convenience stores so therefore other than brewed coffee & store made sandwiches are more expensive. You don’t “grocery shop” there You run in for 1 or 2 things needed in a hurry. Food stamps are for shopping for necessary groceries not for convenience items & the person using them should try to make them last as long as possible so family always has food.
Guess they do not “youths” in large groups running all over the store stealing stuff.
Majority of welfare recipients are white, employed and live in red states. How about the real welfare queens like Israel, GE, Verizon, Bank of America, etc?
Not all people who use the EBT cards are deadbeats. My daughter draws less than $200 a month in food stamps……… she is a single Mom of 3 (one of them is in a wheelchair and blind) …. my daughter works 40 hours a week draws $15 an hour and needs a little help…… So NO I do not agree with the sign. Limit what they can get on the card like Steak and other high price products that would be an extra to someone else but do not ASSUME THAT BECAUSE THEY USE A EBT CARD THAT THEY ARE DEADBEATS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

More than once my wife and I have observed this. At one store a well-dressed lady in front of us in the grocery line bought a large amount of groceries and, of course, paid for all of it with food stamps. Then, she left the store for the parking lot and, naturally, gets into a brand new Mercedes to drive away.
and if you are disabled ….say like a disabled vet who can no longer work??? The problem is not the people who abuse it…it’s the people who ALLOW them to abuse it…SO, if you voted for a person who will not fix the welfare system…then you only have yourself to blame…be careful who you vote for.
