U.S. Quits the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO)

President Donald Trump’s administration has announced today that America will withdraw membership from the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization.

UNESCO has been very anti-American for years and shamefully recognized Palestine as a full member. After America cut funding to the group, our country lost its voting rights in 2013.

President Trump was not willing to let America be part of an organization that has a “continuing anti-Israel bias.”

A press statement from State Department spokesperson Heather Nauert confirmed that the bold move will be completed in 2018:

On October 12, 2017, the Department of State notified UNESCO Director-General Irina Bokova of the U.S. decision to withdraw from the organization and to seek to establish a permanent observer mission to UNESCO. This decision was not taken lightly, and reflects U.S. concerns with mounting arrears at UNESCO, the need for fundamental reform in the organization, and continuing anti-Israel bias at UNESCO.

The United States indicated to the Director General its desire to remain engaged with UNESCO as a non-member observer state in order to contribute U.S. views, perspectives, and expertise on some of the important issues undertaken by the organization, including the protection of world heritage, advocating for press freedoms, and promoting scientific collaboration and education.

Pursuant to Article II(6) of the UNESCO Constitution, U.S. withdrawal will take effect on December 31, 2018. The United States will remain a full member of UNESCO until that time.

UNESCO is known for designating World Heritage sites, which have been highly controversial this year with the Tomb of the Patriarchs being named a Palestinian World Heritage site, even though Israelis believe the city is the birthplace of the Jewish people.

Jews believe the Tomb of the Patriarchs (which is also known as the Cave of the Patriarchs) is where Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob are buried. Muslims, who, like Christians, revere Abraham, built the Sanctuary of Abraham in the 14th century.

UNESCO is also known for promoting women’s rights, clean water, and literacy.

This is a breaking news story. We will update this report as more details become available.
