It has to be frustrating for former President Obama to watch his legacy crumble on a nearly daily basis under the Trump administration. Executive orders to enforce immigration law, steps to repeal Obamacare, reversing onerous government regulations that he imposed, and certainly more coming down the pike are all taking a toll.
Seems nearly every day, something Obama instituted during his eight disastrous years in office is being erased by President Trump.
Here’s another one: The president just revoked one of Obama’s proudest achievements – Transgender bathroom rules.
President Donald Trump’s administration on Wednesday revoked landmark guidance to public schools letting transgender students use the bathrooms of their choice, reversing a signature initiative of former Democratic President Barack Obama.
Reversing the Obama guidelines stands to inflame passions in the latest conflict in America between believers in traditional values and social progressives, and is likely to prompt more of the street protests that followed Trump’s Nov. 8 election.
Obama had instructed public schools last May to let transgender students use the bathrooms matching their chosen gender identity, threatening to withhold funding for schools that did not comply. Transgender people hailed the step as victory for their civil rights.
Trump, a Republican who took office last month, rescinded those guidelines, even though they had been put on hold by a federal judge, arguing that states and public schools should have the authority to make their own decisions without federal interference.
How important was the transgender bathroom issue to Obama? Well, we know it took precedence over such items as improving the American economy or defeating ISIS.
But Obama, in a last ditch effort, tried to overturn a judge’s ruling that suspended enforcement of the Obama administration’s order allowing transgender students and workers to use the bathroom of their choice.
Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton referred to Obama’s decrees on transgender bathrooms as the “latest illegal federal overreach.”
Obama “is attempting to rewrite the laws enacted by the elected representatives of the people, and is threatening to take away federal funding from schools to force them to conform,” he said. “That cannot be allowed to continue.”
President Trump agrees, and just like that he has ended one of Obama’s most prized liberal platforms.
